Mooney, so sorry about the dear kookaburra! He looks so sweet in the picture. You are wonderful to care for injured birds. It must have been so sad to lose the kookaburra.
I am a bird person. I have a white-faced cockateil named Pearl. He is very close to me, follows me around the house all day. I don't keep him in a cage.
He looks just like this:

Moony, that is sad about the kookaburra.
We have them in the back yard here.
Constance, i had a parrot similiar to yours when i was a little girl.
i am looking forwards to getting another budgie (small caged bird, can be trained and let fly around the house)

Keeping a bird in a cage is like amputating a human's legs and keeping him locked in a 10x10ft room for his entire life.

...^...^...constance and tatiana, you have no idea how much your kind words mean to me.
When the birds arrive I try not to bond with them but they are so dependent it's impossible not to get attached...or to be devastated when you find them lifeless, especially as it seems to happen just when you think they're going to survive.
Even so, it's a privilege to have them, even when it's just for a short time.
...constance, the cockatiel is beautiful! Many north queenslanders call them quarrions.
...thank you, thank you ladies.
...hi paladin. I feel the same way. But when someone turns up at the door with an injured bird they've scraped off their windscreen....what can you do? My brother made me a big enclosure from cattle gates we found at the tip, and I've put driftwood perches, a water pond etc. in it to make it as 'natural' as possible. When they get better I open the enclosure so they can climb up into the neem tree above it...the ones I've had will never fly again because their wings are so damaged.

Sorry to hear that Moonie, I was just admiring your new avatar as well I am a bird fan too. I feed the wild birds in my garden and get quite a variety nowadays. I have a pigeon with a bad foot, (it was caught up in discarded cotton thread), that I feed each evening. He/she comes down about now so that is where I am off to!! I call him Limpy.

Re: Things you wanted to say......
...^...hey nash...I love wild birds too. We've had heaps of them this year. As well as being on the migratory path for wild birds, the waterholes that usually dry up by June still have water in them, so it's bird paradise here. My sister is a keen photographer and she's just stayed with me for two weeks to photograph the birds. She had intended to stay for 3 days but couldn't tear herself away because of the variety of wildlife available...I'll post a few of her pics on my avatar to give an idea (I remember you once asked me about the tawny frogmouth that was my original avatar [Froggy the Bird])

Re: Things you wanted to say......
...hi constance. This little bird is a baby. It lives in a tree beside my house (shed). My neighbours claim it's a 'sausage tree' from Africa, and that giraffes graze it's upper branches....it's huge. It'll fall down on my shed one day and take it out. But the birds love it. The parents of this chick are big and clumsy. When they first started flapping around out there I thought it was a giant fruit bat...or something )

Re: Things you wanted to say......
...we haven't identified baby...my sister's going to look it up in her book when she gets home...she left this morning
...today's avatar: we haven't identified this black one either. I don't recall seeing one around here before. It's in a coral-batwing tree (an unremarkable, gnarly-looking tree all year...and then it drops its leaves and blooms!)

Coincidence is a funny thing isn't it?
I'm about hallf way through Crime and punishment at the moment.
I once tried to read it before, when I was 17 or so. Back then I read a Dutch translation in which the language was formulaic and archaic and got rather bored with after a while - I never made it as far as where I'm at right now.
Now I found an English translation which is written very fluently, it's an absolute joy to read it like that.
Half way through I can already safely claim that this ranks among the very best pieces of writing I ever read.

Someone should listen to this:

It's me playing guitar with my friend on drums.

...I'm someone. I listened. I'm not a musician but I once loved one, and I've spent a fair amount of my past standing next to the front-of-house guy at gigs (not touching any of the controls, even though I was itching to). I share this to give me some credibility when I say that you sound pretty good to me!Paladin wrote:Someone should listen to this:

...my daughter's in a similar boat to you. She wants to sing (and she plays guitar and piano quite well) but works in coffee shops to support this habit. She's been onstage at most of the festivals around the country. She rang last sunday to tell me it's not all it's cracked up to be, the muso's life. Some of her friends have found fame (Aria Awards are the indicator in Oz). She says those friends change very much once the pressure sets in, and it frightens her. I know EXACTLY what she means and it frightens me more (for her...she's not very level-headed and is extremely theatrical...sigh).
...anyway, you sound pretty good to me!
