High water risin'
Risin' night and day...
We are gearing up for the flooding of the Mississippi River here. The riverside park is completely flooded and over the weekend they closed the street closest to the river. It's supposed to crest on Saturday, but there is snow and rain forecast to the north in Minnesota, so that could change.
It will not reach my house, and will not reach the library, although in years past it has come within about a block of the library.

I've been reading about the flood. It's a gamble living so close to the Mighty Mississip. Stay dry, tigerlily!

Thanks Blondie
A gamble indeed....and yet there are those who take it in stride every single year...the water and mud flows in, then out, and they just hose it all down and start over.....something about the allure of living on the river I guess

I love the flasher!!! Long John made a post on ER the other day that said something along the lines of "Chuck Berry has about as much charisma as a flasher in a school yard... ...cracked me up!

Hahaha! I got a trench coat last week, my future as a flasher is assured (except I messed it up on a night out on the weekend...don't even know how...)
But what I want to say is this...We're getting a new addition to the family!!! I'm getting a new little baby cousin!!! I'm actually SO excited by this!

Re: Things you wanted to say......
Just wanted to say, I had the nicest morning yesterday. Driving through farmland, I passed a farm with a sign on the front lawn: Standard Poodle Puppies. It just happens that we are looking for a Standard; I had been emailing breeders for the past few days. The sweetest 80ish year old man took my phone call and said come right in. The puppies were just two days, and the mother, who had been friendly at the front door, followed us to the whelping box, jumped in and started scolding us, baring her teeth in the fiercest way and growling menacingly. I was so sorry to worry the mother dog that we were going to harm or take away her puppies. Cutest puppies, all bunched up together.
The old man commented on my t-shirt whitch displays a Chinense character, then told me he was born and raised in Japan. I heard all about his fascinating childhood as the son of a teaching missionnary. Then we walked through the barn with neighing horses and bahing goats to a kennel with wood shavings on the floor, where I found four more, six-month old poodles. All of them were absolutely covered in wood shavings, begging for attention to be petted.
I forget who it was, Balzac or Rodin maybe, who was asked by a friend how to alleviate depression, and the artist said, Go to the zoo and stay all day for a few weeks.
There's something to that, as I think over my experience with the sweet old man and his animals.

Do you have experiences where people are so distracted or careless that they forget to tell you something you need to know? I've gotten 6 emails back from my queries to breeders, and each one forgets to answer one or more of my important questions, like Where are you located? Knowing from that the kennel is in Pennsylvania--no street address given--is not enough. Basic question, Do you have puppies? How old are they? What colors are they? What is the price range?
I was just complaining about this to a mother at the bus-stop; she leads a girl-scout troop. She told me the most amazing stories about parent negligence:Telling a mother every week for weeks in advance that her daughter needs a permission slip to go on a trip, emailing and phoning the mother with reminders, and then the day of the trip angrily complaining when her daughter isn't allowed to attend the trip. She had some wild stories.
Do you get bothered by things like that?

Yes as a teacher I had many similiar experiences with parents . Yet if I dared make one tiny mistake , I was certainly let know.Constance wrote:Do you have experiences where people are so distracted or careless that they forget to tell you something you need to know? What do you teach, and what ages? I teach college freshman, the two basic English classes that the kids need to graduate, and thank God I've never had to deal with a parent. I expect the kids to be forgetful and sometimes really confused about what they're doing. I really think their brains aren't well organized enough to be totally efficient and organized. It's a big relief to them that I'm lenient, and everything almost always seems to work out by the end of the semester. At 18-years-old, they're still kids.

My exams start a week today. My exams end three weeks today. Then I leave my lovely school. Forever. I'm terrified.

Re: Things you wanted to say......
I left my lovely school 50 years ago, this coming July. I returned there for a reunion about 17-18 years ago. Here's a pic of the 'new' building on its opening in 1899 (the school was founded in 1565):

Good luck in your exams, Rue!
