Re: poetry thread
I don't agree with the setiment of the poem. It inspired a Roy Boulting film starring his wife Hayley Mills. It was a really strange film and it quoted that poem throughout. I wanted to read the rest of it in order to make an informed critique of it

Re: poetry thread
That's the one. I was dead tired wat hing it and missed the end. I googled it next day to see what happened and that's where I came a ross the poem. The movie was widely criticised at the time for implying that to have Downes Syndrome ( called Mongolism then) meant you were hard-wired to be a psychotic murderer. And if you were one, you were personally faultless.

GOOD ADVICE FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME
behind the pain
someone is rejoicing
behind the torture
there is love
who's going to buy
this bullshit
if you don't become the ocean
you'll be seasick
every day
behind the pain
someone is rejoicing

79. To CHRIST
WILT thou forgive that sinn, where I begunn,
Which is my sinn, though it were done before?
Wilt thou forgive those sinns through which I runn
And doe run still, though still I doe deplore?
When thou has done, thou hast not done, 5
For, I have more.
Wilt thou forgive that sinn, by which I'have wonne
Others to sinn, and made my sinn their dore?
Wilt thou forgive that sinn which I did shunne
A yeare or twoe, but wallowed in a score? 10
When thou hast done, thou hast not done,
For I have more.
I have a sinn of feare that when I have spunn
My last thred, I shall perish on the shore;
Sweare by thy self that at my Death, thy Sonne 15
Shall shine as he shines nowe, & heretofore;
And having done that, thou hast done,
I feare noe more.

Re: poetry thread
I wish I understood your language Yak but I don't.
It's nearly as diappointing as my failure to satisfy my sweet tooth. I'm on a trawler delivery to Port Moresby. We are off the Mitchell River and have a fleeting moment of weak internet reception. I'm on watch till midnight and crave sugar. I ratted through the freezer on here. Last cook left container of designer ice cream. Was elated. Popped top. Was used to store apple sauce. Devastated. Only sweet thing on boat is half a block of home brand cooking chocolate. This boat is 3 stories high. Might pop down the 2 flights of stairs and have a crack at it.

Re: poetry thread
Hello pinz. We're tied up at the wharf at Thursday Island now. We' e cleared customs and the Quarantine guys fe just checking the boat for rats and cockroches and other vermin. We'll be gone in half an hour and so will the reception.
I must report that the home brand cooking chocolate in no way resembled an edible substance. FYI it has 7% reduced fat cocoa powder. All other ingredients have frightening chemical names.
The next leg of the trip is over the open ocean and can be quite terrifying. A few trips ago we broke down and nearly lost the boat.
I'd vowed never to go to sea again but how soon we forget terror. If not, no second child would exist.

Re: poetry thread
Aw thanks pinz. We've been declared vermin free and just underway again. I don't know how to add photos from the iphone. A pity. It's a gloius day. So far.
Your an estry is interesting. I come from a line of immigrants. Mostly 10 pound poms. A cattle rustler and Irish convict or two I suspect
I love being at sea on a trawler. Nice big engine and a spare. Sailed up the coast of New Zealand when I was young. Was horrific. Will never set foot on a yacht again.

Re: poetry thread
just jagged a scrap of reception passing Yorke Island.
Am worried. The faux chocolate is starting to taste good. Have mouthful now, washing it down with sweet coffee.
Am on the back deck. Wind knotting my hair. All sorts of hums and rattles from the engine and the usual groans from a boat with the throttle at full bore. We're trying to outrun the bad windy weather.
A few random waves over the side.
This Australian loathed Ned Kelly with Jagger. His performance was an embarrassment. I couldn't watch more than 5 minutes of it. Rubbish.
Our Sunshine, with Heath Ledger, is infinitely better.

Last 24 hours after we hit the open sea were like surfing the apocalypse.

Re: poetry thread
Oh the abominable wind!
Thanks pinz. I didn't realise that. I remember that race very well. It was a sensation down here. The Prime Minister wanted to give everyone the next day off.
I was fortunate in that the Samoan deckie on the boat took a critical watch for me. I was to man the wheel around 5am and at that moment was busy throwing up into a sheet that was laying around in my cabin. It meant his watch was a gruelling 10 hours. Bless him. I did rally enough to cook a bacon and scrambled egg and fried mushroom breakfast.
The boats headed for refit are stripped of all of the processing equipment before we sail, and have minimal fuel and water because they are going to be slipped, sandblasted and painted. So there is no rhythm to their motion in a rough sea. They just bounce around like corks. Four of us go. Skipper, engineer and two deckhands. Except for the engineer we all take turns at the wheel. Be ause I do the cooking the other deckie does a longer watch.
I can't tell you how grateful I felt when he did my entire watch.
We arrived in Moresby at lunchtime. Flew to Cairns at 5pm. I'm tucked up in a motel now and fly home tomorrow.
The return trip is in 3 weeks

Re: poetry thread
a work in progress
while she waits
she thinks
There's going to be trouble
Old scores to settle
I can feel it in the air
The tattooed man
from the south
The boy with snake-eyes
from his lair.
the clash
O sister O sister beware.

Another prayer
Another candle lit
Another stick of incense burned.
For the sick
For the dead
For the dying
For the suicidally depressed.
For my heat-attack friends
Get better.
For Dean and the boy down the road
and young Mitch from the boat.
I see your hands on the rope
A prayer
A lit candle
A stick of incense
For you all I will cover all bets.
Bless. On the occasion of this talk about death

Re: poetry thread
gear shift
not dead yet
sudden crying in the night
something isn't right
the stranger
the pall of death around him
Enshrouding
The animals
so taken
increasingly uneasy around him
his cheshire grin.
The tattered stranger
from the south.
Tattoos and a gimpy hip.
The wildcat stare
Then there's the boy
the snake-eyes
the challenge
Is there.
