Nope! It's much more straightforward, actually.

I don't know the rules yet. When am I supposed to give the first clue? Tomorrow?

...generally you state if it's a novel, poem etc....then usually you wait till someone asks for a clue...
...ahem...can we have a clue?

It's an American novel from the 1950s by an acclaimed writer/painter/thinker.

Re: The Peg-leg and the Parrot: ATU's literary game
Ok, here's another clue:
First, a famous quote from the novel:
"One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things."
Second, a famous quote by the author:
"I am glad to be a maggot in the corpse which is the world."
Just add up the images and you'll find out the title.

...ah I see it now...Henry Miller's 'Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch'. It seems so obvious now!

...^...while I await the verdict I'll just post this:
...it's a play.
...it's a play.

As the title of this thread suggests, it was originally conceived as a character-based (rather than title-based) literary quiz.
To ring the changes here a little, perhaps we ought to introduce character/incident-based clues into the mix?
Here's a character from a late 19th/early 20th c play:
