...well, the computer wouldn't function at all yesterday which was fortunate because I did the gardening, cooked soup, walked the dog I've just inherited, dug up some worms to feed Froggy the Bird, washed off the tree-sap that was about to strip paint off the car, took the battery out of my bike and into the garage to be recharged (I forgot to turn off the ignition switch and it doesn't have a kick-start), did some shopping for my mother and walked over to feed my sister-in-law's (is this correct apostrophe use, eagle-eye Cath?) birds and water her yard as she and my brother and their boys have gone east to do some shopping and visit the dentist now that the road has finally opened.

I hadn't realised that the road was open. The highway has been silent since Christmas. I heard a rumbling one evening and felt a small vibration underfoot and thought we were in for an earth tremor...it was a convoy of trucks rolling in. (Very nasty feeling when you live on a coastline. I really like this little fella, sj.)

Anyway, computer's going to give up the ghost any minute, and then if I want to post I'll be forced to go to the bait and tackle shop. The shop is on the beachfront but the computer (there is only one) is in a claustrophobic 6 foot by 3 foot booth. It's a bit like an old-fashioned phone booth, and the scent of slightly rank fish-bait is enough to put you off. Anyway, this morning the computer is gracious and is letting me in for what might only be a brief moment, so I'm going to prattle on while I can.

Then I am going to spend the day in a frenzy trying to print quite a lot of stuff I've written that I'd rather not lose...I know I should have an external hard drive but there you go. The old printer's cactus someone's just lent me one...not too hopeful about the computer lasting long enough to install it but you never know.

Cath and Tatiana, I hope you have a fabulous time at the blues fest. Here is a photo of my and my daughters' feet at the 2009 blues fest in Byron...please take gumboots and socks!!!!!!!

Tigerlily, it must be awesome to see a mighty river like the Mississipi rising. Stay safe and dry.
Constance, I'll repost on the China thread when I stop feeling peeved that the page of recollections I posted was lost in transit a few nights ago.
Guacamayo, I'll join the Kafka thread when I get a reliable computer (might be awhile...need someone to mind the inherited dog now before I can go east to the shops to get one).
...sj, I have ordered two books you recommended. (Gut feeling...Magister Ludi...Fair cheers )

So, just in case:

Moony, do you want a computer?
i have a spare Windows XP machine that you could have, you would just have to pay the freight to have it sent up to you.
it is in very good condition.

i have the perfect packing box and coolite also, so it shouldn't mightn't get damaged on the truck.

email me if you are interested.

i'm serious.
