Constance wrote:Hi Top, most jobs are posted on the internet now.
With only a high school degree, you'll be limited to mostly hourly wage jobs.
The best source for hourly wage jobs is SnagAJob.com. You will definitely find suitable jobs here.
Go there and enter your zip code and say how many miles you are willing to travel.
Jobs will appear on the screen.
I just did a search there saying I could travel 25 miles and a lot of jobs came up.
Two other sites for jobs are Monster.com and CareerBuilders.com. With these you'll have to scroll through a lot of jobs to fine those which only require a high school degree.
Big companies have job applications posted on their web site. See Home Depot for an example, or A&P. Search the big companies around you.
You may be disappointed to see that most jobs for just a high school degree will be part-time with no health insurance, benefits, or retirement plan. Even with two part-time jobs you will have trouble making ends meet.
If you can't do a college degree, you should go to the site for your Community College and see all the jobs they have certification programs for. Some certification courses are as short as 6 months. A lot of jobs are available in health care, but you need a certificate in something like, say radiation technician.
You would be much better off in getting a two-year Associates degree in something that targets a specific career. That is what community colleges are geared for. You can get student loans to cover the tuition. You can find a part-time job and take courses at night.
Keep us posted on how your search goes.
Thanks for the advice but I'm looking for a job, not a career.
For instance: a janitor.

Janitor? That's an old geezer's job innit?
How about construction worker. You get to wear construction worker boots and a hard hat.
May, huh? You're lucky. We have to wait till June here.

Do you need a job, do you have unemployment benefit in your part of the world? In England you can leave school then apply for Jobseekers Allowance, which you get for 6 months max, all you have to do is go and sign on locally once a fortnight and tell em you are looking for a job. During the 6 months that you claim, you get yourself an alchohol or cannabis habit. Then you claim you are unable to work as you are an addict and you then get sickness benefit and your rent and utilities paid for. Why work?

I picked up an application at Little Caesars. I saw they had a sign looking for pizza deliverers.

Hi Top,
Even if you're just looking for a job and not a career, check out SnagAJob.com. It's got plain old jobs that pay hourly wages. The first ones that came up on my screen were for Starbucks.

I checked, there wasn't anything on the site that I could apply for.
I'm filling out my application for Little Caesars now... I have terrible handwriting, I hope they don't think I have Down syndrome or something because that's what my handwriting looks like.

You mean...when I was a starving artist living in a garret, all I had to do was tell the Job Centre I was addicted to...let's say, laudanum...and they would have paid my rent for the next 20 years?
If only I'd known....

Anyone have any tips for job interviews? How should I dress? Should I get a haircut, or just wear a ponytail?

Put your hair in a pony tail and put a smile on your face....look the interviewer in the eye when you speak. Wear a shirt with buttons and a collar, doesn't need to be fancy. Nice jeans (no holes) or khakis. Shoes and socks. If you have piercings on your face, take them out. Use good grammar when you speak and don't cuss. Be there on time and with a positive attitude.
Good luck! And please let us know how it goes.

Paladin,
the Best of Luck to you from me also.
that is lots of good advice from tigerlily
plus they say if you wear something red, it gives you a confidence boost.
if red is not your colour (as i imagine it probably isn't) wear red socks or undies.....
be sure to tell us how it goes.
Re: How do you find a job?
...my kids told me this works for them:
...listen to whatever music makes you feel good while you get ready
...stand up straight (you'll feel taller, and look confident, and it'll give you something to focus on)
...imagine the interviewer is 3 inches shorter than you (you'll feel less intimidated)
...take a little time to answer questions (he'll think you're calm and thoughtful)
...speak slowly and softly (if he has to strain to listen to you you'll feel like you've got the edge)
Good Luck

Seriously, I wish you good luck!
My rule to interviews used to be "I'm not going to think about the interview at all and once I'm there my spontaneous ability will make the interviewer think I'm a good choice". But that didn't work very well. At least think a bit of what would you answer to the question "Why do you want this job?"... and remember, don't do speed.

That's the attitude. I don't think you will have any problem with the interview, whatsoever

I don't know yet. He said if I don't hear from him by next monday I should call. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna get the job because I'm an inexperienced lazy reprobate piece of shit though. Oh well.tatiana wrote:Paladin

Re: How do you find a job?
The fact the guy told you to give him a call is a good sign. (rather than the old...'don't call us we'll call you')Paladin wrote:He said if I don't hear from him by next monday I should call. BTW: Aren't you being a rough on yourself ?
He didn't yell...CHECK afterwards like some Monty Python skit, did he ?Paladin wrote:He made a lame joke and I mumbled "damn." He didn't react to it at all.

you sound just like my youngest son.....
online games are his strength.
Re: How do you find a job?
I don't play vidya games. I spend all my time playing music and I told him that (he asked, I didn't just say it). He was a nice guy and I thought the interview went pretty well but I'm just such a shitty human being that there's no way he will want me to work for him.
