Australia is having an influx of Italian and Irish people coming here to work (they are coming from all over Europe and Asia as well).

Ha Ha
Just given a month's notice to London Underground. After more than 13 years, I've just had enough.
The London 2012 Olympics is a transport catastrophe just waiting to happen, and I don't want to be around to deal with it.
Going to live off a slice of my pension contributions and write for a year.

Moony and Constance
Thank you.
If you've been following Pinz's "Caffeine" thread in the Science section you'll know that I've been having one or two medical annoyances recently. My bloody awful job! I've known older colleagues who have died through shift work and stress. I recognise the early signs, so I'm getting out while the going's good.
Back to the garret, then. Hee hee.
Thank you.

I have just seen this. Good for you Eddie
I imagine it's going to be really stressful for anyone working for LU this year. I think you will be a massive loss though, particularly for the passengers and of course your colleagues who I am sure will miss you.
Good luck with the writing though, can't wait to read it.

Nash and TigerLily
Thank you.
My resignation is something of an act of faith, a leap in the dark, but after the week I've just had at work I know that I've made the right decision. This transport system doesn't work NOW, so there's absolutely no way that it can deal with an event like the Olympic Games when millions of additional punters will be factored into the already prevailing chaos.
The moral of this story, the moral of this song
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong
Over the past couple of days I've been resuming work on the temporarily-stalled LU opus magnum. Two months solid work ought to see it finished.
Thank you.

Re: How do you find a job?
A leap of faith.....the time is right for it. After all the pondering and contemplation, the leap is what's left. A person either goes for it or doesn't, becomes paralyzed with indecision or decides to go ahead and jump.
Eddie, I wish you all the peace that comes with knowing that you are being true to yourself.

And always trust your cape."

A thread about an unemployable 21 year old turns into a thread congratulating an old guy for retiring

The more old guys who retire, the more vacanies for younger people.
But I'm only retiring from my present job. Once the writing's finished, I'm going to have to find something else to meet the bills. NOT in the railway industry, though. Never again.

To give you a brief idea of how our useless Management operates:
About 2-3 years ago LU started shedding jobs (i.e. sacking staff) by closing ticket offices etc. in the name of cost-cutting & greater efficiency.
Then about a year ago they suddenly woke up to the fact that in 2012 London hosts not only the Olympic Games but also the Queen's Jubilee celebrations (to say nothing of the usual congested events such as the Marathon, concerts, football matches etc.).
In a blind panic about (legitimate) safety concerns, they embarked on a campaign of rapid recruitment of mostly young people to whom they gave a meagre 8 days training before introducing them to the lovely (not) travelling public.
Speaking personally, it took me about 6 months before I felt reasonably confident that I knew what I was doing in this job, that I could handle most eventualities- although there are incidents that still astonish me to this day.
I've met a few of the new recruits: perfectly nice kids, but they all look about 17 to me. And I find myself thinking, "You poor devils; you have absolutely no idea what you've let yourselves in for."
In about 6 months, those who survive the experience will look as haggard and exhausted as me.

Re: How do you find a job?
Eddie, yesterday's NYTimes had a rather long article about the anticipated traffic situation in London during the Olympics. Sounds quite alarming.
Hope you're enjoing your freedom. Keep writing!

Some of us were young people once, apparently.Shreddie Mercury wrote:The good thing about young people is they don't give a fuck
Long ago, when even Bobby Dylan was young, it was almost impossible, it seemed, to be unable to get a job if you wanted one. That was then. Hope you find something, Mr Mercury, before too long.

Shreddie, keep trying for 3 more weeks, if you get nothing by then it's probably best to turn to a life of crime. Best of luck amigo.
