you have excelled yourself

we woke up this morning bereft and grieving

this is even better than ATU

whilst being a perfect replica

the tabula rasa where we will leave our imprints

the sands where our footsteps will tread lightly

thank you Swiss Jung

...hmmm...so you could translate Rilke's poem then? The one about the panther? In the poetry thread?

...when you have time, of course. Smile

...oh for heaven's sake... Rolling Eyes do you think I haven't trawled an ocean of versions looking for the one I hear best?

I have three...a translation from a book, another from online, and the third from a friend who translated it in jail...I hadn't asked him to. I'd sent him a copy in German and he sent the translation in reply.

You are demonstrably a clever man sj. You can run with an Arts forum....won't you....err...contribute to it?
Cool

...you can handle a bit of sturm und drang or whatever...

...and yes. It's been in seeking a definitive translation of this poem that I've come to understand the...difficulty...of translation.

well, I sometimes get paranoid.......I used to have a magic parasol that would protect me from paranoia

but I left it out in the rain

no more irony for a bit of while.....

while I gather what wits I have left....hehehehe

good for you - there's safety in numbers......

even I'm aware of the subtle jealousy which goes deeper than this particular dilemma (on my part)

...once I posted a beautiful poem by a Russian (Georgian?) poet. It was in English. I had to type the whole thing in because the online translations were clunky. Pinhedz reposted the poem in Russian (I think), then sj reposted in English a version that was electrifying. He said he'd 'mangled' it through various translations and back to English.

I was pleased to hear about the online translating...that's how I found a German sj for sj (shone jungfernfahrt shipwrecked jellyfish...it translates as beautiful maiden voyage shipwrecked jellyfish...pirat what a happy accident finding that was cheers

...on envy, I envy you going to the Bluesfest with Tatiana. I went to a Byron blues and roots fest once with my grown girls. I arrived as excited as a yapping dog and left with a lingering image of myself as some sort of maiden aunt... jocolor

there's more to SJ than translation.....I'm sure you're aware of that

even for someone like me where things get lost in translation......hehehe......I'm sometimes blindsided by the obvious too

I think it might be challenging.....hehehe......for me to get the full on treatment from you......

I have no problem with SJ - I never did.......that fateful day notwithstanding.......

but you're just a bit too much for me to get to grips with right now with your flagrant miscreant piss-taking.......

I never claimed to be immune from the effects of ridicule

you go for it - one day it'll get you......

to misquote a phrase - uppity by name, uppity by nature

it takes all sorts

...not sure how to respond Cath.

Was posting this in reply to Tatiana at the same time as your post.

...I organised the tent, the stretchers, the sleeping bags, torches, gas burner for morning coffee and esky to chill evening wine. We drove 1,100 km and I should have got 3 speeding fines and a ticket for going through a red light, but miraculously the cameras were turned off. While my daughter took a turn driving I lay on the back seat of the car and thought I might be a bit feverish. After a few hundred more ks and at 2 am I was sweating and the girls were fighting for control of the music. At the fest I was almost scalped by a crowd-surfer's button getting caught in my hair...the young one lost her wallet, her mobile, her onward ticket...and of course I was apologetic because we all knew that it must be my fault...I have a picture of the look on her face.

Of course, she found everything under the rubble of her possessions some time later...

by teh way unless you're Irish - Yeats is like a reverberant echo of nonsense.........

you can't REALLY get Yeats or even James Joyce unless you've felt the terrible betrayal of being Irish

heheheh

so there!

you can pretend to understand it.........go for it.......

but Yeats is inaccessible to people who aren't Irish

ya know why cos of the awful stigma

Unlike this one...to get this one you only need to have been driven mad by love.

Sweet Dancer
by William Butler Yeats

The girl goes dancing there
On the leaf-sown, new-mown, smooth
Grass plot of the garden;
Escaped from bitter youth,
Escaped out of her crowd,
Or out of her black cloud.
Ah, dancer, ah, sweet dancer!

If strange men come from the house
To lead her away, do not say
That she is happy being crazy;
Lead them gently astray;
Let her finish her dance,
Let her finish her dance.
Ah, dancer, ah, sweet dancer!

bollocks - Yeats is more than simplistic answers to obvious questions

he's the sinew and soul of Ireland

you will NEVER understand Yeats

unless you've gone climbing up Horse Chestnut trees in Dublin for conkers.....

or been swept away by the singular beauty of Donegal......

there's more to being Irish than booze and bullshit

you'll never understand the deep heart's core......hate to break it to you

because you've never been to Dalkey.......you've never been to Sligo.......

you don't understand Yeats - just admit it

you think you're so fukking clever - you really do - but you'll never understand Yeats

tell me what 'An Irish Airman Foresees his Death' means to you, clever clogs
