Moony's new Computer
Moony, if you read this,
i finally got the computer out of its storage spot, it is now on the bench near my desk and soon i will start work on tidying it up to send to you.
after i get my sons stuff of it, i think the easiest thing to do will be a re-install of the OS.
the techy stuff, this is what it is
(or for your friend)
Asus PRQL-SE M/B
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.80Ghz CPU
Asus 512M 9500GT PCie video card
1G DRR2 RAM
500W power supply
Liteon 20x DVD writer SATA
Windows XP Home Edition
custom built in April 2009
cheers....

Re: Moony's new Computer
we are on a roll, i just plugged it in and turned it on.
at the moment i am copying everything on the "C" drive onto an external, for later transfer onto my sons new pc.
it could take many hours though, the old XP is filled to the brim and is running as slow as posssible.
it will spark up after i take all my sons stuff of it and do the re-install....
Re: Moony's new Computer
i think the computer i was going to give to Moony has just crashed......
i uninstalled Office 2010, it told me to do a re-start, i did & it now goes to a black screen.

Re: Moony's new Computer
meanwhile Moony's counting her barramundi........
oh, Tats, really......?
that's disappointing.......
she's out there in no man's land.....
we can't contact her......she's cut off from ATU
I miss her personally......
what shall we do?
is there a chance you have her phone number so that Michael can take it from here?

Re: Moony's new Computer
okay we are on the road to Moony having her computer ....again.
i would like to believe that i am in the middle of a successful OS reinstall.
or not.
fingers crossed.

hey Mr. Jam....
it will be if it works, i am just not sure how stable the hardware is, it is all just a bit over 2 years old, but it had a pounding from my son, and the harddrive was always runnung on full.
anyway, we will see how it cleans up, and then i can send it to her, i have a recent pc tower carton with packing inside so it should be safe from bumps on the way up to her place.....NOT postal workers don't care how fragile the goods are.
it is wierd though, because the computer keeps turning itself of as it completes eachsection of the install.
i turn it back on, and it goes into the next section.
windows is installing now, 38 minutes to go
we'll see.....
edit...it is configuring now, so it is going as it should.
double edit....and registering the components....so we are getting somewhere now.
Re: Moony's new Computer
what are the suggestions for antivirus and so forth?
free ware only.
i have put Microsoft Security Essential on it so far
and i rang Moony to tell her of the progress, she is looking forward to get back online

Re: Moony's new Computer
i have already put the pdf reader on it....an essential service.
and the flash programmes etc
i personally use IE8, i don't know what she would use, so i will put firefox and chrome on it, then she can choose.
she likes google search
i use WMP, i tried to VLC (recommended very strongly by my pc mates) but i could never get it started.
maybe i should try again.
i guess that is the joy of this thread, moony can use it herself to find out what she needs .
i have heaps of things on my pc, but it will be fun for moony to do it all herself.
at the moment it is downloading 94 updates, all XP security updates and so forth.
i have to make sure that the IE9 doesn't sneak in, i tried that and it is terrible.

Re: Moony's new Computer
the computer is ready, with the basics installed.
openoffice, MSE, plus other reasonably essential bits and pieces.
i will turn it on again tomorrow and check for any more updates, XP SP3 is old but reliable.
and if there is anything else to put on it, i don't know what her internet speeds etc are like where she is...i am in internet central here, so it is simple for me to load whatever she needs.
and then off to the post office to post it to Moony.
sounds like a plan.

Re: Moony's new Computer
and the news is.....Moony's new computer is up and running.
it has gone from 12Gb free space to 92Gb free space.
(that is how big WOW and Office are.)
anyway, it is defragmenting now, and later i will add a few programs to it.
XP at its finest....straight after a clean install.
