Eddie suggested The Gangs of Manchester by Andrew Davies.
It was an excellent read. It is a history of The Scuttlers (No I had not heard of them either), but they were gangs of boys that lived in the slums of Manchester and thereabouts in Victorian times. They had a dress code, cap worn on back of head, a muffler round the neck and pointed clogs, their hair was combed into a fringe at the front which they called a "donkey" fringe.
Anyway, they were bad boys, worse than todays yoot for sure.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Thanks Eddie

Re: Books you have read that were recommended by ATU posters
I read the epic masterpiece that the Northern Irish poster recommended......I can't remember his name......he posted for a short time on ATU
2666 - by Roberto Bolano
that was probably the best book I've read in the last few years......
I got Quicksilver out of the library and left it on a bus 10 minutes later......hehehehe.......
so I haven't read that (obviously)
but how is it SJ - any good - you were getting into it a few weeks ago

I'm not a big fan of science fiction writers that go all Victorian or Edwardian on my ass
I did like Diamond Age by NS but I think they really were exceeding their brief when they all started mixing sci fi with quasi-mixed-up history
I'm pretty sure Iain Banks has never done that.......
