Alternative London Tube maps
The 1908 London Tube map, presented with geographical accuracy, resembled a confusing, tangled ball of knitting:
The 1908 London Tube map.
It took the genius of Harry Webb to realise that geographical accuracy is not necessary for passengers travelling underground- all they needed was a topographical impression of the relative position and sequence of the various stations and information about the interchanges from line to line. He arrived at something resembling an electrical circuit diagram- hardly surprising since he was an electrician by trade:
Harry Webb's original 1931 design, the basic principle of which has been adopted by transport systems around the world.
The April 2011 Tube map, much expanded from Beck's original but based on the same topographical principle.

It was Paul Middlewick who first spotted that the Tube map conceals a number of animals:

Re: Alternative London Tube maps
Samuel Arbesman of Harvard university came up with this handy Tube map of the Milky Way.
I wonder if he'd let us use it for our new logo?
