La gente, necesitando una manera solemne de dirigirse a nobles y altos dignatarios, comenzó a utilizar la expresión Vuestra Merced, que por tratarse de una manera indirecta de dirigirse a alguien, usaba la conjugación verbal correspondiente a la tercera persona. De esta manera, si alguien necesitaba hablar con un superior jerárquico, un noble o un alto dignatario, le decía: "Si Vuestra Merced lo desea, puede disponer de esta sala..." o "¿Cómo estuvo el viaje de Vuestra Merced?" o "Espero que Vuestra Merced haya disfrutado de su comida" u otras frases por el estilo.
