"Optical art is a method of painting concerning the interaction between illusion and picture plane, between understanding and seeing."

Not sure that's a realistic expectation, John. Playwright and diarist Alan Bennett is a Trustee of the British National Gallery and one of the perks of the appointment is the chance to wander around the various galleries at night when the general public aren't admitted.
Even so, he takes a shooting-stick with him to ease his aching back/feet.

Many years ago, my wife Knuckles, and I, attended a Valentine's night champagne do, in celebration of the Royal Academy Monet exhibition. It was a 15 quid offer, in the Times, as I remember. I vividly recall being the only attendee left, in a room surrounded by Monet's London/ Thameside paintings, just sat there in the middle of the room, until one of the curator/ guards came in, and told me they were closing, and I must leave. But I had those two minutes or so, the only person in the world, alone with these Monet's.
