Songs that would make a good movie
There are songs that although not necessarily would make a good soundtrack, have something that I identify as "movie-alike". I would say it's neither the story told nor the lyrics by themselves... it's the way the song is put through.
But I'll leave it up to your own criteria to choose what songs to post in this thread
Now I have to go... but I'll be thinking at the doctor about this... and I'll be back

Alright
This is what I mean
A song that has that movie-alike thing (for me):
Yes... it is Leonard Cohen's Everybody Knows and I feel as if I was sitting seeing a movie while I listen to it

I think I have heard of that movie... but I must confess I have only seen parts of it. It is a tragicomic thriller, right?

Bob Dylan's long narrative songs Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, Black Diamond Bay and Joey might be suitable for a screen adaptation.

I thought of this one yesterday... I haven't paid detailed attention to the lyrics really but it sounds like a movie.eddie wrote:Bob Dylan's Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

Dylan's Drifter's Escape...
“Oh, help me in my weakness”
I heard the drifter say
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away
“My trip hasn’t been a pleasant one
And my time it isn’t long
And I still do not know
What it was that I’ve done wrong”
Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside
A tear came to his eye
“You fail to understand,” he said
“Why must you even try?”
Outside, the crowd was stirring
You could hear it from the door
Inside, the judge was stepping down
While the jury cried for more
“Oh, stop that cursed jury”
Cried the attendant and the nurse
“The trial was bad enough
But this is ten times worse”
Just then a bolt of lightning
Struck the courthouse out of shape
And while ev’rybody knelt to pray
The drifter did escape
“Oh, help me in my weakness”
I heard the drifter say
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away
“My trip hasn’t been a pleasant one
And my time it isn’t long
And I still do not know

Re: Songs that would make a good movie
The other day I read this in a psychiatric bulletin:
Definition of 'haltlose'
January 1998.
I was also sorry to read that you had received no reply to your query from the World Health Organization (WHO).
As a former WHO staff member who was responsible for the coordination of work that led to the mental disorders chapter in ICD-10, I think I can clarify the matter for you. The term is a carry-over from ICD-8 and ICD-9. Its origin is in Karl Jaspers' description of personality variations. In Jaspers' discussion of personality types, the plural noun 'die Haltlosen' is used as a synonym for 'die Willenlosen' (the weak-willed). The English word that comes closest to the German adjective 'haltlos' in this context is 'groundless'. In fact, the relevant passage appears in the English translation of Jaspers' General Psychopathology (1963) as follows: 'Those who have no will-power at all, the drifters, fairly adequate rendering of 'die Haltlosen'. The reason for retaining the term was that it used to be familiar to many European psychiatrists. With the impoverishment of psychiatric vocabulary, which unfortunately is a side-effect of the DSM-III and its successors, the connotative heritage in psychiatric terminology tends to be lost.

Re: Songs that would make a good movie
...I googled that interesting term.
It's commonly labelled as a personality 'disorder'.
I much prefer the term used in your post ^ asdf, where it's termed a personality 'variation'.

Re: Songs that would make a good movie
I much prefer the term "mental" so I know straight from it what kind of person I am dealing with

IN GERMANY BEFORE THE WAR
In Germany Before The War
There was a man who owned a store
In nineteen hundred thirty four
In Düsseldorf
And every day at fine o nine
He'd cross the park down to the Rhine
And he'd sit there by the shore
I'm looking at the river
But I'm thinking of the sea
I'm looking at the river
But I'm thinking of the sea
A little girl has lost her way
With hair of gold and eyes of gray
Reflected in his glasses
As he watches her
A little girl has lost her way
I'm looking at the river
But I'm thinking of the sea
Thinking of the sea
Thinking of the sea
We lie beneath the autumn sky
My little golden girl and I
And she lies very still
Marianne Faithfull singing it:
Wiki: Randy Newman's song "In Germany Before the War" from the album Little Criminals is based on Kürten's life (The Vampire of Düsseldorf), with some poetic license (the song is set in 1934, for example, despite the fact that Kürten was executed in 1931)
Wiki: M is supposedly based on the real-life case of serial killer Peter Kürten, the "Vampire of Düsseldorf"

Re: Songs that would make a good movie
...I remember watching The Who's 'Tommy' when it first came out in the 70s.
There's a truly bizzarre scene with Oliver Reed and Tina Turner.

Lily The Pink
(Chorus)
We'll drink a drink a drink
To lily the pink the pink the pink
The saviour of our human race
For she invented, medicinal compound
Most efficacious in every case
Mr Freers had sticky out ears
And it made him awful shy
And so they gave him medicinal compound
And now he's learning how to fly
Brother Tony was notably bony
He would never eat his meals
And so they gave him medicinal compound
Now they move him round on wheels
Old Ebenezer thought he was Julius Caesar
And so they put him in a home
Where they gave him medicnal compound
And now he's emporor of Rome
Jonny Hammer, had a terrible st st st st stammer
He could hardly sssay a word
And so they gave him medicinal compound
Now's he's seen, but never heard
Aunty Milly ran willy nilly
When her legs they did recede
So they looked on medicinal compound
Now they call her milipede
Jennifer Eccles, had terrible freckles
And the boys all called her names
But they gave her medicinal compound
Now he joins in all the games
Lily the pink she turned to drink
She filled up with parafin inside
And despite her medicinal compound
Sadly piccalilli died
Up to heaven her soul ascended
All the church bells they did ring
She took with her medicinal compound
Hark the herald angels sing
(Chorus)

^ he unburies his baby back? (the narrator I mean... not Sal Mineo)
The narrator here seems to know something about Jimmy Jazz... but he won't tell
not sure if I understand the plot but like it
The police walked in for Jimmy Jazz
I said, he ain't here, but he sure went past
Oh, you're looking for Jimmy Jazz
Sattamassagana for Jimmy Dread
Cut off his ears and chop off his head
Police came looking for Jimmy Jazz
So if you're gonna take a message 'cross this town
Maybe put it down somewhere over the other side
See it gets to Jimmy Jazz (See)
So tell me now
Police come in they said
Now, Where's Jimmy Jazz?
I said, hmm he was here but uh,
He said he went out
Who is it they're looking for?
Jimmy Jazz, Jazz, Jazz, Jazz eh
Sattamassagana for Jimmy Dread
Cut off his ears and they'll chop off his head
Oh you're looking for
Jimmy Jazz, Jazz...
What a relief!
I feel like a soldier,
But I look like a thief!
The police walked in for Jimmy Jazz
I said, he ain't here, but he sure went past
Oh, you're look for Jimmy Jazz
Don't you bother me, not anymore
I can't take this tale, oh, no more
It's all around, Jimmy Jazz
J-a-zee zee J-a-zed zed
J-a-zed zed Jimmy Jazz
And then it sucks
He said, suck that!
So go look all around, you can try your luck, brother
ANd see what you found
But I guarantee you that it ain't your day
Your time, it ain't your day
Chop! Chop!
