But Escher wasn't always so accommodating when it came to album sleeves. Mick Jagger once attempted to commission him to produce an album cover for The Rolling Stones but fatally blighted his request by starting his letter with the chummily over-familiar formula "Dear Maurits..." He received a sniffy refusal by return of post, deploring Mr Jagger's lack of good manners.
