The difference between public discussion and discussion in the scientific community

Post  pinhedz on Tue Jan 14, 2014 9:25 am

I had supposed that the discussion of scientific topics in public fora would be qualitatively (if not quantitatively) similar to the discussions in the scientific community.

That is to say, I expected that the level of technical expertise would be lower in the public discussion, but that otherwise the nature of the discussions would be similar.

Was I wrong to expect this? geek

Big difference #1:

-- in the scientific community, one starts with a QUESTION, and looks for evidence to answer the question;

-- in the public discussion, one starts with the ANSWER, and looks for evidence to support the case.

I think that's the difference between a scientist and a propagandist.

What makes a scientist a scientist instead of a propagandist?

When a matter is settled, there is nothing more to be learned--true?

So, if one is no longer curious cat , the only purpose for further discussion is to WIN--not to learn.

Does the propagandist get a prize then?

Only if there is a policy decision at stake.

So, is there a policy decision at stake?

Depends--is the forum downtown, or is it just on the innernet?
