Joe Bussard's basement--the madman who first recorded John Fahey

Post  pinhedz on Mon Aug 13, 2012 1:35 am

This thread was preserved from 2009, if memory serves. Joe Bussard is a mad record collector who also recorded old-time musicians on 78-rpm discs, long after the mainstream music industry had abandoned the format.

The 2009 thread reads as follows:

I just got Joe Bussard's Fonotone collection (for which LJ gave the heads-up).

I am now convinced that it's still 1930 a few miles West of Frederick, Maryland.

John Fahey--who said "I may be a fabricator, but I am not a liar"--expressed his indebtedness to Fonotone and Joe Buzzard [sic]:

"...the legendary Fonotone "race," "old time playin'," "Hillbilly," Hawaiian and Indonesian record catalogues of the late 1920's and early 30's which were produced or non-produced by Mr. Joseph Buzzard, founder and president of the Fonotone Recording Laboratories of Frederick, Maryland, and this is as good a place as any to express our thanks to Mr. Buzzard for his valuable assistance ..."

Fahey ain't no liar, as long as 1930 is a geographical location rather than a point in time.

There's a story (true, mostly) about Joe and Mike Seeger.

Remember Mike? The folk picker that scared Bob Dylan so bad he decided he had to write songs so that Mike couldn't play them better than him first?

The story goes that Mike went to visit Joe because of his legendary record collection.

Joe was not impressed by the city slicker.  His first question was:

"So, what are you going to trade me for letting you listen to these things?"

"Well," says mike "I have lots of good things on tape."

Joe says: "I don't want TAPE. I want the DISC."

Mike says he doesn't have much of any records, because he spends his money on instruments.

Aha--so Mike's a MUSICIAN.

So, Joe tells Mike he's going to record a few numbers for Joe's label-- FONOTONE Records.

Mike's only problem is that he already had an exclusive recording contract with another label.

"Don't you worry about a thing, Birmingham Bill!" says Joe.

Unfortunately, there are no Birmingham Bill Fonotone recordings on the YouTube, but here is a recent live performance by Birmingham Bill himself:

Of course, Mike got it from Frank Hutchinson:

How about that

I just started thinking about Joe during the epic drive from Crawfordsville, which crossed the same divide as the Cumberland Gap and then passed right by Joe's house in the dark.
