Back when Napster and Audiogalaxy were in their prime, people could have used file-sharing to get all kinds of hard-to-find out-of-print stuff (I know I did Very Happy ).

But people mostly didn't do that. By far the most popular Satchmo track was "It's a Wonderful World"--a track they could have got on any half-price greatest-hits compilation.

It's no wonder that the RIAA put the crimp in the file-sharing pipelines. The public was refusing to pay for even the cheapest and most readily available stuff sold in stores, or that they could get in a few days by mail order.

To the RIAA, I say "Go get 'em."

File sharing actually made me by more records, because I used it for sampling. I downloaded about 6 recordings of Louis playing W.C. Handy songs, and liked them a whole lot.

Then I found out all of them, and many more, were on this CD for $7.89:

Louis was in decline and turning retro by this stage in his career--but it was still very good retro ("Hello Dolly" came later):
