The nutritional tower of Babel

Post  pinhedz on Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:33 am

The advocates for various nutrition plans are constantly contradicting each other. It seems to depend on what the advocates are fixated on as the enemy: salt? cholesterol? glycemic load (i.e, sugar including carbs)? oxidation and inflammation? acidification?

The old enemies were salt and cholesterol (blamed on eggs and saturated fat). Then came glycemic load (popularly known as carbs). Now the big buzz is all about inflammation, blamed on oxidation, and even Omega-6 fatty acids are now demonized. Rolling Eyes

What do you'all think--who is the real enemy? Suspect

Interesting new trend in restaurants around the DC area.

If you order a Texas Bar-B-Q super-sized lumberjack man-killer bacon-and-cheese burger, the server will say something like "That comes with fries, but you can substitute steamed spinach if you want."

Yes--I'll have the steamed spinach, we wanna be healthy, don't we? Laughing

Famous Dave's BarBQ joint--although Minnesotan--features the "TEXAS MANHANDLER" barBQ brisket sandwich, which (and I quote):

"... separates the men from the boys: real Texas beef brisket and zesty hot link sausage, sliced thin, piled high, and crowned with Hell-Fire Pickles."

But Dave will also serve a 660-calorie meal, consisting of salmon, broccoli, and something called "pineapple steaks" (evidently grilled):

I went there and ordered "salmon."

The waitress, looking somewhat concerned, said "... and are you alright with the broccoli and pineapple?"

... as if to say "Last chance to substitute fries and baked beans." Razz

Many restaurants that are otherwise not into health food have a "gluten-free" section in there menus.

That silly--there's nothing bad about gluten. scratch

Nutritionist's nightmare and Scotsman's delight, the deep fried Mars Bar:

Scotland has the highest rate of cardio-vascular disease in Europe.

The Mars Bars look very temping--and at least they aren't white. geek

Healthy-eating advisors are always working on ways to dumb down their message for their ignorant public, and the latest dumb-down is "Never eat anything white."

That's mainly because the processes of producing refined flower and refined sugar remove some beneficial ingredients.

But if the people are so clueless that they need their message dumbed down like that, they will probably bulk up with brown bread and brown pasta (believing they are low-carb) and they'll do all their baking with low-calorie brown sugar--and Mars Bars. Razz

I suppose they will also make sure their eggs are brown, and that they avoid cauliflower. Rolling Eyes

You can even get brown salt (sea salt).

Is it low sodium? Ya think?

I was hungry when I ordered this, but I finished the first two of them and now I can't eat any more.
Does anybody else want it?

According to the poll results so far, it's probably OK as long as you don't eat the bun. geek

The AARP (who have been inviting me to join since my 12th birthday), have added COFFEE and CHOCOLATE to their list of SUPERFOODS. Shocked

But if they want to have any credibility with me, they'll have to add ethanol.

If every American became a teetotaler, there would be an additional 80,000 deaths annually due to coronary heart disease THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY DRINKING.

If every American became a teetotaler, there would be 100,000 FEWER alcohol-related deaths annually from causes other than coronary heart disease--MOSTLY TEENAGERS.

At last count the number of teenage AARP members was NONE.

I've heard from young girls who believed that if they ate a 7-11 chili dog they would--as they put it -- "die."

Dr. Hymen said the original dietary guidelines issued during the Nixon administration were originally gonna be mostly "watch how much sugar, salt, and fat you eat" ... but THE SUGAR INDUSTRY intervened, and as there is no FAT INDUSTRY per se, fat was singled out as villain over sugar ... leading to all manner of Extra Low-Fat Frosted Chalkballs and those sort of products ... but as Dr. Hymen says, fat in small quantities is a nutrient, while sugar, without the essential fiber barrier provided by Real Fruit, is in fact a poison ...

Dr. Hymen seems to be good at rhetoric, but to talk to scientists, he needs to be less sensationalistic and more scientifical. bounce

Dr. Hyman has been sending mixed signals about calcium supplements, but he's a big promoter of Cale and Spinach and advises cows to eat lots of grass to build strong bones.

This just in -- the new red menace is CANNED TOMATOES. affraid

Unless that pinhed starts growing his own tomatoes, he has to buy canned tomatoes to make the rice and beans every week.

But the leading-edge-people-in-the-know say that the cans are lined with something that will cut our life expectancy half.

Ha ha, it's too late to cut the pinhedz life expectancy in half. Razz Razz

But I still want to know--what's the story on this silent toxic killer? Suspect
