Old Maybelle was pretty good. However, when I play my Johnny Cash box set I always find myself fast forwarding the Carter family tongue

Johnny was very fond of the Carters, of course. And he recorded this gorgeous tribute to Sarah and Maybelle for one of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken' albums:

Joe and Janette built this big ole barn as a performance venue, right close to the original Carter Family farmhouse, which now has a museum in it.

At the very first performance in this barn, Johnny Cash played. It was the only time the Carter family fold allowed non-acoustical instruments:

The view from the inside--fun for the whole fambily:

(The seating was literally cut into the side of a hill with Joe Carter's shovel. When I was there, it was old patches of carpet set on the ground, but with the ground cut into the shape of benches. Some places they put old seats from old school buses:

Johnny Cash came back again when he only had a few more breaths left in him.

He made everybody cry talkin' about June:

But it all started in the 1920s when the man from the record company came to Poor Valley, lookin' to record hillbilly music. A.P. Carter wanted to go into town (Bristol, I think) and make a record. His wife Sarah was pregnant, and didn't feel like it.

When the time came to go, Sarah said "Must I bring my guitar?"

A.P. said "Well, if we're a-goin' to make a record, I think you better brang yer guitar!"

A.P. had a dream--that a poor man could get out of Poor Valley by gettin' inter the show business.

Bristol, Tennessee it was, in 1927. The recording people were from the Victor Talking Machine Co. Jimmie Rodgers made his first recordings at the same session.

Probably the first Carter Family song I knew:

Lonnie Donegan was a fan of the Carters as well as Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie (and Lonnie Johnson of course...), and it was Lonnie who introduced me to the song in 1957:

He also did this one:

Unsurprisingly, Dolly Parton has also recorded 'My Dixie Darling' (in company with Arlo Guthrie):

When the folks come down to the dance floor and start clogging, you'll see a whole lot of women in Poor Valley that resemble each other.

To be specific, there are a whole lot of women that look like this (if I remember right, Sarah married several times and never had to change her name):

Here's June as a young'un:

A fine show of well choreographed clogging here, or flat footin' as some say, filmed at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964, I think:
