I wouldn't let 'em decorate my front parlour, nor run me up a dinner suit!

Old Maybelle was pretty good. However, when I play my Johnny Cash box set I always find myself fast forwarding the Carter family

Johnny was very fond of the Carters, of course. And he recorded this gorgeous tribute to Sarah and Maybelle for one of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken' albums:

Bristol, Tennessee it was, in 1927. The recording people were from the Victor Talking Machine Co. Jimmie Rodgers made his first recordings at the same session.pinhedz wrote:But it all started in the 1920s when the man from the record company came to Poor Valley, lookin' to record hillbilly music. A.P. Carter wanted to go into town (Bristol, I think) and make a record. His wife Sarah was pregnant, and didn't feel like it.
When the time came to go, Sarah said "Must I bring my guitar?"
A.P. said "Well, if we're a-goin' to make a record, I think you better brang yer guitar!"
A.P. had a dream--that a poor man could get out of Poor Valley by gettin' inter the show business.

Probably the first Carter Family song I knew:
Lonnie Donegan was a fan of the Carters as well as Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie (and Lonnie Johnson of course...), and it was Lonnie who introduced me to the song in 1957:
He also did this one:
Unsurprisingly, Dolly Parton has also recorded 'My Dixie Darling' (in company with Arlo Guthrie):

Re: Carter Family
A fine show of well choreographed clogging here, or flat footin' as some say, filmed at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964, I think:
