DAVID COLE, HALF OF THE GRAMMY-winning C+C Music Factory team that created some of the hottest dance anthems of late '80s and early '90s, died at age 32.

The official cause was announced by his partner, Robert Clivilles, as complications from spinal meningitis. He had been seriously ill since last summer. (AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS)

C+C's "Gonna Make You Sweat" helped fuel a dance resurgence, and C+C was one of the teams who made producers as recognizable as artists.

Cole, who won his Grammy for "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, said "factory" was tongue in cheek: "Our job is to get everybody working together."

There were some family disputes, however, particularly after C+C used Martha Wash to record the vocal for "Gonna Make You Sweat," then the sultrier Zelma Davis to lip-synch it for the video. Wash sued for credit, then later became a member of C+C.

Cole was born in Tennessee, where he sang in the church choir as a boy. After coming to New York, he made his mark as a deejay at the Better Days club.

As a session musician, he worked on such remixes as Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love" and Janet Jackson's "Pleasure Principle." He also sang on some C+C tracks, but he and Clivilles broke through with remixes like Natalie Cole's "Pink Cadillac," which helped pioneer dance music's crossover to top-40.

They later remixed for dozens of artists, from Luther Vandross to Grace Jones and Seduction. "The producers are the stars now," Cole said in 1991. "We have a sound, then find artists who fit it."

The funeral was on Saturday, 9 a.m., at the Union Baptist Church in Passaic, New Joizee
