Eric Korngold--composer for the action heros (Erroll Flynn, etc.)

Post  pinhedz on Sun Aug 07, 2011 8:30 am

Korngold won his first Oscar for his soundtrack for Erroll Flynn's "Robin Hood," but back in germany he had been an opera composer, and in this song he reaches for the heights of Strauss's 4 last songs (by way of context, the lady is a candidate to replace the man's deceased wife. She doesn't make the cut in the end, but as he would have said himself "it's not you--it's me," and he'd be right).

Korngold first came to Hollywood to write high-tone music for a high-tone film ("Anthony Adverse," I believe, starring Frederic March). Korngold considered this project to be like an opera with spoken dialogue--that's how he approached it.

After "Anthony Adverse," Hollywood producers offered him the opportunity to write the soundtrack for "Robin Hood," but he said no; he planned to head straight back to Austria to resume his career as a classical composer.

Then he heard that his property had been confiscated by the Nazis, and reconsidered. He became one of the most successful soundtrack composers in Hollywood, but by the end of WW-II, he had been forgotten back in Germany.

Although he wrote some classical works in the US (such as a violin concerto for (Yasha Heifetz), symphony orchestras seemed not too keen on performing his works--maybe because he was old-fashioned compared to the post-war avante-garde composers, or maybe because he was tainted with "commercialism" due to his having written so much for Hollywood.

Here is some typical (first-rate) movie music by Korngold:

One of Korngold's most familiar melodies is from his incidental music for "Much Ado About Nothing" (opus 11) written when he was only 21.

The last part of the suite is called "Hornpipe."

But that orchestral arrangement was not performed at the time, because WW-I was getting underway and cash was becoming scarce, so the theatre couldn't afford ti hire an orchestra.

Korngold worked around that by distilling the music down to a piano-violin duet (which this youtuber thought went with Claudette Colbert):

So out of Waxman, Steiner, Newman, Rozsa, Korngold.... you choose Korngold to make a hullabullaboo. Why I am not surprised? ([because I'm already user])

I've heard of making plans for Nigel, but this is ricoculous. We're gonna need a bigger moat. Paging Dr. Chatterjee- your O.R. scrubs have been deBaathified. Never sell me the cods. He's at home, noshing his kites.

You can't discuss those others on the Errol Flynn thread.

Rosza goes on the Charleton-Heston-biblical-epic-El-Cid thread. Bernard Hermann goes on the Hitchcock-and-Sci-fi thread, Dmitri Tiomkin goes on the Gunsmoke-and-Alamo-Wild-West thread. etc., ...

Where are those other threads, you ask? Miss Panties nuked them, and no one so far has done anything about it. Mad

Yeahbut, Objective Burma was a Waxman movie because it was a WWII movie, and Errol shouldn't even have been in it because it should have been Peter O'Toole, or Jack Hawkins and Anthony Quayle accompanying Gregory Peck. bounce

And, OK, Steiner did the Wild West also, but those movies were absolutely no place for a kiwi.

Here's the deal. It's really all about country of origin:

Russian -- Movies about the Great American West (Dmitri Tiomkin, Max Steiner equally good)

Hungarian -- Movies set in the Holy land, or in the MGM Gothic language (Rosza, Jarre imitating Rosza)

Viennese -- Action Adventure and WWII movies (Korngold, Waxman, et al.)

New York avant-guard -- Hitchcock and sci-fi (Bernard Hermann and his imitators)

And wee mussn't neglect for mention:

Polish composers best for East German African and Boer War action e.g.i.e. Józef Żmigrod AKA Allan Gray. Also Polish for neurotic Jim Stewart western and/or Orson Welles is Nazi thriller e.i.g.e. Bronisław Kaper.

Wisconsin composers beset for flying monkey, expendable, or Tahitian mutiny adventure i.e.e.g. Herbert Stothart.

Here's where it gets complicated--Stothart is primarily Korngold school, but he lapses into Tiomkinism whenever he sees a horse.
