It's curious that the man who created Sherlock Holmes, the apotheosis of pure reason, should in later life have embraced spiritualism.

Andrew Lycett's excellent biography of Arthur Conan Doyle MD examines his Catholic background, his youthful rejection of religion and the post-Darwinian intellectual context of Doyle's writing:
