I can't recall now. But it's frequently stated that the Ike Turner band's 1951 hit 'Rocket 88' (released as by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats) owns that title:



The compilers of Hoy Hoy Records' CD 'Rock Before Elvis, Before Little Richard, etc ...' suggest, though, that 'Hastings Street' recorded in 1929 by Charlie Spand and Blind Blake, was the first recording with the beat they called rock & roll 20+ years later:

A musican friend once assured me that Rock n Roll was invented by Mahler in a few bars of (I think) the 5th Symphony.
