HP Lovecraft
not sure if we've had a thread on him before
seen his Wiki picture and it's pretty scary
considering reading him when I have overcome my current hurdles
anyone read him and if so......well?

Re: HP Lovecraft
I responded on another thread that I thought he was unfashionable. His outmoded ideas probably wouldn't appeal to many readers nowadays.

Re: HP Lovecraft
thanks, Nashie.......I think there's a lot of truth in that
people like Clinton are not your common or garden readers.......
I just got an uneasy feeling when Hi-Top mentioned him......
after him being so prevalent around the office.......
his Wiki page says that he inspired a lot of horror writers....and that his influence permeates some genres of literature
I'm not convinced that's much of a recommendation
I have enough of the Twilight Zone in my head most of the time without reading about it for pleasure
do you remember that TV program they had in the UK - with the swirling silhouette of a girl.......and the eerie, memorable music - can't put my finger on the name of it right now......
oh, yes - Tales of the Unexpeted - the perfect antidote to Jackie...heheheh

Re: HP Lovecraft
Yes, Cath, there was indeed an HP Lovecraft thread on the old ATU site called "How to spot a fan of HP Lovecraft", but I can't locate it right now.
So, here's a spooky picture of the man himself instead:

Yeah.....hhehehe
thanks, Eddie.....(you are the repository of all our notions and attempts at knowledge....and all our lost conversations)
I wasn't really interested in him too much at the time to find out more about him
but now that Clinton is reading him and Hi-Top is interested
my curiosity has been piqued.......

One thing I DO remember about the old ATU Lovecraft thread is that a real fan is never seen without a copy of the dread Necronomicon of the mad Arab, Abdul Al Hazra.

Yes, I do, I have the music in my head now and I can't remember the name of the programme
I edited my post - it was Tales of the Unexpected
the music/opening image was incredibly haunting and effective
I still can think of some kind of hint of the tune
wasn't really able to watch many episodes

Re: HP Lovecraft
Yeah you are right "Tales of the Unexpected".
I only remember 1 episode clearly and that's because it was particularly creepy.
It was about a couple that moved to a beautiful cottage in the country, it looked ideallic. But, at night everything changed, it was so isolated and dark, strange things started to happen. I think they were murdered in the end. I often think about it when I see a pretty little cottage and think ooh I bet that would be nice to live there, yeah during the day maybe but not at night!!

well, I either I take the plunge into the freaky world of HP Lovecraft
or I stay safely on the shore and admire the sunset
I know which one I'd rather do - but I shall probably do the opposite......
thanks for the edifying input as always, Eddie

it was one of the most discomfiting programs on TV when I was young
I think the (American) Twilight Zone came a bit later - not sure
another one which would be totally weird if anyone remembered it
was the one that had the opening song - Midnight is not a moment, midnight is a place......
I think that was the freaky druid, stonehenge kids show that probably scarred a lot more people than just me.....hehehehe
there was a lot of horror in books (my parents had an extensive collection) and on TV when I was young
than what I let myself experience now - the difference is that sometimes my life takes on the panicky feel of horror these days......(like now for example)

I suppose they influenced the Bond opening or the other way round
I didn't realise it was Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected (at the time because I had never heard of him)
in which case, where's Twoody?

Re: HP Lovecraft
H.P. Lovecraft's work isn't really scary and it's definitely not gruesome like so-called "horror" is nowadays (google "Human Centipede" or "A Serbian Film"), and his writing style definitely will not appeal to everyone. Most of his stories don't even really have plots to speak of, it's almost entirely about the tone of the writing and the feeling you get as he describes things that are indescribable. The common thread that runs through all his work is that there are things in the universe that are incomprehensible to man, and the mere sight of some of these things (monsters, a lot of the time) will drive you mad. I've read quite a few of his short stories online and could recommend some if you want- they're pretty much all available for free here.
He also writes poetry. Here's a sample:

The Twilight Zone is from 1959. Tales of the Unexpected came around 20 years later according to wikipedia.
I think I've seen nearly every episode of the original Twilight Zone series now...I started watching it because of a Rush song.

Re: HP Lovecraft
I'm currently watching it, I'm on season 3. It's hit-or-miss, really. Too many deus ex machinas, the dialog is poor a lot of the time, nothing ever returns to the status quo at the end of any episode and yet nothing ever changes- they see aliens, werewolves, vampires, fish-men, and all sorts of other crazy shit that is never referenced again in any subsequent episode except for a VERY vague main plot line about government coverups and aliens that appears randomly in every few episodes.
Also there is way too much bullshit pseudo-science.

Re: HP Lovecraft
yeah, you've described it much more thoroughly than I could if I had been bothered to watch enough episodes to give it much thought.......
it's some kind of 90s concoction of beastly ghouls and scary beings - that really wasn't that dark
it was kind of a running joke that the two lead investigators were pretty......I was going to say pretty dumb......but mostly they were just pretty......
it was some kind of freak 90s phenomenon attempting to cash in on the whole Rockwell....conspiracy bullshit.....
it was way too glossy to be authentic
(like if it was on X-Files - then it obviously wasn't close to the truth - that's the whole point about uncovering real conspiracy and paranoia.......you can't package it for primetime TV)
but it happened......we got it out of our system and now we can move on to bigger and better......hehehe (just my catchphrase thang)

I read the poem - I think I took it in in the quick glance I afforded it
I'm not sure if you're familiar with my idiotic history of nervous breakdown after nervous breakdown.......(seeing monsters wasn't what drove me mad - too much introspection resulted in me going pretty loony-tunes and then I would see the monsters) a pattern that seems to repeat itself due to my stupid crazy non-reliance on any given idea of normality......too crazy, loony-tunes - you said it yourself
but what interests me about Lovecraft is his apparently intuitive understanding of the dark heart of madness (from what I have gleaned on ATU - ain't clicked your link yet)
I'm pretty sure I'm not ready to travel into that imaginative world when the wrecking ball of my brain is doing so much damage to my life right now......

just pointing out that I mentioned it for the sake of covering all bases
you have explored it and come up with an answer
I don't really care
Oh, Jesus Christ - do I have to explain myself ad infinitum to every single whinnying pony in the pack?
it's not your fault - but it's driving me mental
