I'd best re-post what's left of this thread before the link to the ATU cache expires.

Mock Tudor houses look fine but I don't think I'd like to live in one:

An Edwardian suburban property would suit me nicely:

What's your favourite style of suburban domestic architecture? Ed13

The Edwardian suburbs did not ape the architecture of Victorian town centres. The new housing was modeled more on traditional country building, using local materials and skills, and simple designs.

With a variety of designs on homes that ranged from small terraces to semis and large detached villas, the Edwardian suburbs were planned to suggest a naturally evolved village.

...or an Edwardian villa, perhaps?

What's your favourite style of suburban domestic architecture? Ed17

It’s the detached villas that were most influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement.

As reaction against the Victorian preoccupation with industry, pastiche and mass production, the architecture was gentler and more decorative, harking back to a more rural way of life.

Accentuated gables, chimneystacks, buttresses, and inglenook fireplaces appeared, and architects fought against legislation that limited the height of ceilings to a minimum of 8’6”.

And entrance halls became huge, harking back to the mediaeval ‘living halls’ with fireplaces that were probably wildly inefficient, but gave the impression of a great hall in an old manor house.

They have that certain magic about them, a J.M. Barrie/C.S. Lewis kind of magic. Who knows what lurks in the unobtrusive corner or the rarely-used 3rd-floor room?

I like modernist stuff, so this would do me fine. Light and space are what I want.

Perhaps it's all the Nelsonian reading recently, but I think I'm developing a taste for Georgian proportions:

What's your favourite style of suburban domestic architecture? 01

Characteristics of Georgian houses

Pillars in the front of the house.

Square symmetrical shape.

A paneled front door in the centre

Tiled hipped roofs (A roof which slopes upward from all the sides of a building.)

The roof was often hidden behind a parapet, or low wall built around the edge of the roof.

Fan light above the door.

Paired chimneys.

Sash windows (windows which slide up and down).

The windows nearer the roof are smaller than the rest.

This is Cumberland Terrace, Camden Town overlooking Regent's Park. It was designed by architect John Nash for the Prince Regent (later George IV) and named after his younger brother the Duke of Cumberland.

Cumberland Terrace featured in the Doctor Who episode "Invasion" and in the last chapter of John Fowles The Magus (note classical Greek statues).

I've just checked online, and a 2-bedroom flat in Cumberland Terrace will set you back five and a half million pounds.

It would be a gas to live in one of these, but cottages in Portmeirion, North Wales (where the cult 1960's TV series The Prisoner was filmed) are only available for short-term self-catering stays and the tourists must be a drag:

The late theatrical knight Sir Ralph Richardson lived in Cumberland terrace. He used to take his pet parrot for rides on his motor bike around the perimeter of the park.

Charlie Watts grew up in a WWII-era Wembley "prefab":

What's your favourite style of suburban domestic architecture? 800px-Phoenix_prefab

In the United Kingdom the word "Prefab" is often associated with a specific type of prefabricated house built in large numbers after the Second World War as a temporary replacement for housing that had been destroyed by bombs, particularly in London.

Despite the intention that these dwellings would be a strictly temporary measure, many remained inhabited for years and even decades after the end of the war. A small number are still in use in the 21st Century, however, more and more are being demolished. In 2011 the BBC reported that Britains largest existing pre-fab estate, in Lewisham, South-East London, is to be demolished.
