Peter Cook.

This was Alan Bennett at Cookie's memorial service address:

"Trying to sum him up in his latter years, the television in the afternoon, the chat shows, the golf in Hong Kong, one thinks of one of the stock characters in an old-fashioned Western, Thomas Mitchell, say in John Ford’s Stagecoach, the doctor who’s always to be found in the saloon and whose allegiance is never quite plain. Seldom sober, he is cleverer than most of the people he associates with, spending his time playing cards with the baddies but taking no sides. Still when the chips are down, and slightly to his own surprise, he does the right thing. But there is never any suggestion that, having risen to the occasion, he is going to mend his ways in any permanent fashion. He goes on much as ever down the path to self-destruction, knowing that redemption is not for him – and it is this that redeems him..."

(see the "Peter Cook & Company" thread in the Theatre/Performance section.

To be fair, I think all of those actors did a good job, although I don't remember Mature all that much as I haven't seen 'My Darling Clementine' for quite a while. I imagine it's a great part to play, Bennett's description is spot on. My vote goes to Kilmer, although it's close.

Quaid by a mile, the only one who looked like he came down with TB just for the role.

Kilmer looked pretty fucking ill! Or do you specific symptoms?

Quaid really was very good, which is difficult for me to say due to the fact that he is so darn cheesy. I remember Kirk being great too, the movie ('Gunfight at the O.K. Corral') didn't concentrate too heavily on his illness, but he was very cool.

Kilmer had pale make-up, but his physique was hale and hearty.

Quaid looked liked he had starved himself down to 98 pounds.

Ha, funny how people see things differently. My memory tells me that Kilmer looked like shit in the movie, whilst Quaid was kinda hearty. Razz

Quaid's wrists were downright skeletal.

The surest choice of the survey is the absent SAM GILMAN, that dependable thesper who basically DEFINED what it meant to be a supporting player in a Marlon Brando Western genre filme, be it pre or post 'Watergate.' Sam Gilman: he wasn't born in Red~Hook, Brooklyn...but he did appear in an episode of THE FELONY SQUAD. The name of the THE FELONY SQUAD episode? Why, THE DESPERATE SILENCE, of course. Game, set, Gilman. The Champeen of the Canteen, with torque to spare. Storck Chocolate Riesen, Mrs. Lange? All too easy.

Most of the Wyatt Earp cavalcade of lies and balderdashing comes from Stuart Lake's fugazi Earpography book and the subsequent Fattay Arbuckle short very silent film "Ike Clanton Versus The Ornery Singing Nettle". But the legend about how The Doc was a real dentist who liked goosing rabid polecats with lazy-eyed mexiwhores, well, that bit is true blue. Not that Goat Smith would know.
