Sadly, the discussion in this forum of the popular instrumental groups of the late 1950s/early 1960s didn't survive the deletion of ATU Mk I. No cached Ventures; no cached Shadows.

Still, before the Beatles and the Stones and the whole Mersybeat/beat combos/Brit invasion things took off in 1962/63/64, instrumental groups were regular occupants of the Hit Parade charts, on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the US, the Ventures ruled; in the UK, Cliff Richard's backing band, the Shadows were monarchs of the charts. Neither, it seems, influenced or was influenced by the other - they did their own rocking thing contemporaneously. But enough of that: listen to the music!

The Ventures - Walk Don't Run (July 1960 - No 2 US, No 8 UK):
