Has TV run out of ideas?

Post  eddie on Fri May 27, 2011 11:04 am

Well, has it?

I think it has.

Looking back over the last decade or so, I think there were a few straws in the wind indicating that this is indeed the case:

1. Big Brother: TV films its own viewers for the delectation of...er...its own viewers.

2. The Royle Family: sitcom about a family on a sofa...er...watching TV.

3. Numerous "Best of..." progs.

4. What, for example, is 'The X Factor' (etc.) but 'Opportunity Knocks' or 'New Faces' revisited?

5. The return of Dr Who.

So....new ideas for TV programmes, please. It would be interesting to see whether you can come up with something that hasn't been done before.

Hrm, in USA much of primetime network progruming has been consumed by tragic contest shows and fony reality tedium, as has happnd in other earth regions. In USA mainland, the old lion of the canned laughter 3 wall studio set 3 camera trad sitcom formula has all but died, kept flickering only by CBS and Chuck Chaim Lorre, with Aston Kucher & Sons, Fatty & Fatty, and 3 Dweebs & A Clone Theory.

But there are faint glimmer of hopes, and si se puede. .. cables and premium cables have raised the dramatic bar with bold, edgy drammers about imaginary malaysian nurses with drug addictions, terminal cancer high school teachers who cook methe and register pyramid scheme patents, prohibition casino operators with experimental gender change operations for bivalves, roman gladiators with asperger's Syndrome, Cold War Era Advertising Executives with shocking secret neurologist pasts, and International Monetary Fund employees who launder money for Magneto and Meredith Viera.

Presumably ideas should come from writers. Did any of those programs require hiring writers? It was probably a cost-cutting measure--stop hiring writers.

And there's no guarantee that hiring writers now would make a big difference. Some years ago (in fact, quite a few years ago) former TV writer Dick had a talk show and brought on as guests two of his old friends--also TV writers.

It was a heckuva show--mega LOLing. But one of their observations was that the first generation of writers had been schooled in literature and the arts, whereas later generations were schooled sitting in front of the telly.

That's not really true and wouldn't be inherently bad even if it were.

Is it not true that "reality shows" and reruns don't require writers?

Depends on how "real" it is. Shows like Pawn Stars obviously have writers.

...I can't get television reception...there's a techie who fixes such things staying at the caravan park till september 16th...he's just come to my place to give me a quote.

...I have to get a satellite dish, then hire a labourer to install a steel post (there's one at the tip) in the ground in 2 feet of concrete so he can mount the dish on it. The labourer then has to dig a trench from the fence to the corner of the house (shed) so he can lay the cable...there are too many trees for him to put the dish on the roof.

...when/if the trench and post are done he can do the install

...hmmm...Paladin...want a job? Very Happy

Popular theorist Marshall Macloohan made us rethink mass media when he told us that the medium itself was the message. Then he revised his theory to 'the medium is the massage.' That's true, look - http://www.amazon.com/Medium-Massage-Marshall-McLuhan/dp/1584230703

I don't care as long as they keep showing Takeshi's Castle jocolor

The slippery wall was so funny

It was surprising when I was older and I discovered Takeshi was the film maker Takeshi Kitano
