Right now I am listening to a recording made to support the War Effort-- a live radio broadcast from August, 1944, recorded by the US Army:

V-Discs presents “For The Record.”
**************************************************
[daa-da-da-daaa, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, daaaAAAA]
**************************************************

The War Department’s Army Service Forces with the cooperation of NBC is bringing you--and our men overseas--a program of top-ranking bands, top-ranking singers, and top-ranking tunes.

Although this program is being broadcast in America, it’s being put on primarily for our fighting men all over the world. Every tune that you hear tonight is being recorded on V-Discs, the offical phonograph records that the Special Services Division of the Army is making for our armed forces. Over 250,000 records are shipped every month to Army, Navy and Marine installations in every theater of war so that your husband, son or sweetheart is supplied with the best American music by the best American talent.

Perhaps the best way to show you how anxiously these discs are awaited, and how much they mean, is to read you one of the many letters we have received:

“We have played the records you’ve sent us until they are almost worn out. Your records are our only source of music here, and we’d appreciate it if you could send us some more at your convenience. Here we get so that we aren’t particular about much of anything. We’ll be darned glad to get whatever you can send us fellas. We sit and write letters to our loved ones at night, and we play your records until taps almost every night. I told the wife how much they mean to us and I know she thanks you, too, for going to all this trouble for us out here.” [signed] “Corporal Ed Bucky,” somewhere in Italy.

Well, nothing is too much trouble for you out there. Tonight we have the first radio appearance of Gene Krupa and his brand new orchestra. So Gene, give out with “Dear Old Southland.”

*****************************************************
Daaa, da, da-daaaaaa, Da-da-da-daaaaa, da-da-daaaaaa....
*****************************************************

And that was “Dear Old Southland,” recorded now on V-Discs. Soon Special Services Division of the ASF will send them winging overseas, soon to be heard by our service men as they push on to greater victory. And remember this, the greater the victories over there, the greater the obligation for us here at home. This obligation is to see that our fighting men have what they need to continue those victories--what they need, where they need it, and in the quantities they need.

Among the major problems confronting the Army Service Forces is the necessity of increasing the production of the shells that broke the enemy’s grip in Italy, that sent them reeling back in Normandy. The more big shells we can throw at the enemy, the faster our advance, the lower the casualties. Therefore--more shells! It means more man-hours in the powder plant and foundry and shipping offices. But remember--the cost in lives is less. It means longer hours, too, for those workers supplying other needed fighting equipment. And for anyone not engaged in the great war effort, it’s a direct challenge. Your soldier and his buddy over there want to know: are you doing all you can to meet their demand for more shells?

Now, when you assert to be listening now to this, do you mean listening specifically to this youtube clip, or do you mean just listening to the general song via a higher fidelity platform?

I'm listening to this song about Gary Cooper (except it's a guitar instrumental, so it doesn't mention Gary Cooper):

Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin',
On this, our wedding day.
Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin',
Wait; wait alone.
I do not know what fate awaits me.
I only know I must be brave.
For I must face a man who hates me,
Or lie a coward, a craven coward;
Or lie a coward in my grave.

Oh, to be torn 'twixt love an' duty.
S'posin' I lose my fair-haired beauty.
Look at that big hand move along,
Nearing high noon.

He made a vow while in state prison:
Vowed it would be my life for his an',
I'm not afraid of death but, oh, what shall I do,
If you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin':
You made that promise as a bride.
Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin'.
Although you're grievin', don't think of leavin',
Now that I need you by my side.

Wait along, (Wait along.)
Wait along.
Wait along. (Wait along, wait along, wait along, wait along.)
