Interesting quote from Winston Churchill--dated 1899:

"Altogether France has enough to occupy her in Central Africa for some time to come: and even when the long task is finished, the conquered regions are not likely to be of great value. They include the desert of the Great Sahara and wide expanses of equally profitless scrub or marsh. Only one important river, the Shari, flows through them, and never reaches the sea: and even Lake Chad, into which the Shari flows, appears to be leaking through some subterranean exit, and is rapidly changing from a lake into an immense swamp."

It's notable that Al Gore attributed the shrinking of Lake Chad to anthropogenic global warming starting in the 1960s, even though some other force must have been already at work in the 19th century.

if a hoax, why does Steve Hawking say anthro-warming is so real and so scary ... i thought he was smart ... also he is stuck in a chair so all he can do is look at graphs all day ... but i guess they say he also has an eye for the ladies

First of all, note that your short-term pinwheel graphic and my long-term pinwheel graphic don't contradict each other--mine just provides 2000 years more data for context. bounce

Steve’s mother says this about that:

“Not all things Stephen says are to be taken as gospel truth. He’s a searcher, he is looking for things. And if sometimes he may talk nonsense, well, don’t we all? The point is, people must think, they must go on thinking, they must try to extend the boundaries of knowledge; yet they sometimes don’t even know where to start. You don’t know where the boundaries are, do you?”

What Isobel was describing is called “brainstorming.”

Remember, when a reporter asked Steve: “Now that you’re proven the big-bang theory, what are you going to do next?

Steve said: “Disprove it!”

Certain bodily functions are controlled autonomously, and are not affected by such wasting diseases as Steve has. He doesn't just look at graphs, he's the most notorious womanizer since Frank Sinatra. Shocked

Yeabut--how do I know if I have fatty liver? Neutral

But do you know what's really funny? -- There were no global temperature estimates before 1976, and even today there are 8 different satellite-sensor-based estimates that hardly agree within 0.5 degrees.

i know what he says isn't divinely inspired, i was wondering if he spent enuff time looking at climate graphs to have a proper opinion, because he was spouting off about it in The Daily Planet ... or if he was too busy "chasing" "tail"

I think Steve can take the things that he can know a priori and plumb the depths of the most complex abstract problems, but I don't know how much time he has spent studying matters that require empirical studies--matters that entail predicting outcomes that are driven by thousands of influences known from measurement and observation rather than a priori, ranging from melting permafrost in Siberia, the tilt axis and precession of simultaneously spinning and orbiting heavenly bodies, solar cycles within solar cycles, decaying rain forests emitting gases, underwater and under-ice volcanoes, cloud formation due to increased water vapor and increased pollutants, the big-city heat island effect, increased vegetation due to carbon fertilization, saturation of the greenhouse contribution of CO2, the Holocene temperature conundrum, ... and stuff.

What he says about future climate catastrophes sounds like he's going off half-cocked, so my impression is that he's just brainstorming rather than making pronouncements that he's thoroughly thunk through.

True, but maybe she just needs a better script to get back to her old self.
