The most beautiful harmonies are extreme dissonances

... like in the slow part of Tchaikowsky's "Romeo and Julliet."

It's a musicalology thing; PhD musicalologists know how to explain it (something about tensions and resolutions).

I guess that means harmony all the time would be very dreary.

I think of Tchaikovsky as not being terribly interesting because there aren't enough dissonances, but I could be wrong on that since I hardly listen to him, although the film about him starring RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN was excellent, by Ken Russell standards.

One of the interesting things about Tchaikowsky is how he makes his dissonances not sound like dissonances.

Many people, upon hearing that Romeo and Juliet allegedly has dissonances, would say "Huh? I don't hear any."

Do guitarists realize that their 7th chords are very dissonant? I think they all know that if they're playing a D7, they have to play a G chord next to make it all right.

If you ask them to end a song with a D7, would they be able to explain why you can't do that?

Two pieces that sound very pretty, but they are right on the edge of atonality--especially Schoenberg:

I remember seeing The Nightingale performed by the SF Symphony during an evening of Greatest Hits of the 1800s and thinking that Pyotr was the most boring of the bunch. I mean, he's OK for psychedelic children's plays about many-headed mice, but that Nightengale shit was a snooze-fest and a half. Anyways, he's a suicidal gay homosexual with cholera so I hope he's in hades.

What about Wagner and Schoenberg?

Hosni

I really dig Wagner. I don't listen to Schoenberger, shit is wack. If you have to listen to that tripe, listen to Webern.

pinhedz

Webern didn't write the kind of thing I'm talking about. He could only have done it during his early period, and he didn't have one.

Hosni

I guess, I don't really listen to the stuff. I'm really more about these kind of flavas -

I don't hear dissonances in rap. Or any modulations, or any tension or resolution, or anything adventurous, unexpected or dangerous. The music is all plain vanilla.

Tchaikowsky is totally edgy and radical compared to rap.

Hosni

Nah b, you talkin about the notes and keys an shit. You ain't talkin bout the music, I don't think you can even hear that. When that shit's for real, it's strate up from the heart, it's realer than real, you know what I'm sayin?

Snoop Dogg can only dream of ever doing this:

Some very edgy lyrics by Tchaikowsky:

"Akh, igraj zhe moj pandero, akh igraj!
O ljubvi ja zamechtal, o ljubvi ja zamechtal.
Jesli b znal ty pro terzan'ja,
pro dushevnyje stradan'ja,
serdca tajnyje zhelan'ja,
ty b ikh v zvukakh vyrazhal.
Ja staralsja pet' zvoncheje,
v kastan'jety b'ju sil'neje,
chtob zabyt'sja poskoreje,
chtoby gore zaglushit'.
Ja pljashu smeshno i diko,
chut' ne rvetsja grud' ot krika,
no terzan'je tak veliko,
chto jego ne zaglushit'."

For those who prefer the text in translation, here you go:

"Tango vos, el mi pandero,
tango vos y pienso en al.
Si tu, pandero, supiesesmi
dolor y le sintieses,
el sonido que hiciesesseria
llorar mi mal.
Cuando taño este instrumentoes
con fuerzsa de tormento,
por quitar del pensamientola
memoria de este mal.
En mi corazon, Señores,
son continos los dolores,
los cantares son clamores:
tango vos y pienso en al."

Just to make sure our comments are complete and balanced, we should also mention that there are dissonances that really sound pretty bad.
