Why are there banjos?

Post  pinhedz on Tue May 03, 2011 11:24 am

John McLaughlin

So that music-lovers may demonstrate perfect pitch by tossing them into toilets without touching the sides.....

pinhedz

Aren't you going to tell us about the gourds and the stretched skins and the cat gut and the slave ships and Kentucky Juba and Jim-along Josie?

John McLaughlin

I'll let you do a pretentious google.

John McLaughlin wrote:I'll let you do a pretentious google.
I figured you wouldn't have to google, but it would hardly be pretentious if you did; google is for everyman.

It's only pretentious if you google and then say you didn't.

Anyway, I didn't, google Razz

But I read an article in some rag one time (probably a pretentious one) that said the white man took over the banjo from the slaves and added high-tension metal strings in place of the cat-gut strings to make the tone more bright and zingy. But this destroyed the character of the original African instrument, and it was just one in a long line of appropriations of various elements of black culture by the white man. So, in a never-ending struggle to find something the black man could own without the white man taking it from them, the black man invented rap.

Hosni

I have an African thumb piano with a gourd resonator. It sort of makes me King of my street, cock of the walk so to speak. Every instrument should have a gourd resonator, really.

John McLaughlin

Ah. You've found a use for your thumb.

Hosni

Yes.

Never mind any of that other stuff--this is really why there are banjos:

But why are there fretless gourd banjos?

In part, because this man here ....

"Koa wood -- not the highest grade."

Koa wood is always "highest grade." bounce

I have a 100-year-old Koa Wood Martin guitar. Very Happy

Also a Koa Wood uke that says:

"KUMALAE*
Gold Award
PPIE** 1915"

With the Royal Hawaiian seal

* Jonah Kumalae
**Panama Pacific International Exposition 1915

There's something else that makes those two koa-wood instruments extra special--they have both been played by Queen Jane. Very Happy

There was an old lady who died while in possession of all the instruments from her old Hawaiian band, so I bought it all at the estate sale. There were three guitars (two Martins and a Washburn), a tiple, the Kumalae uke (deluxe medel "E"), and a yang chin (hammer dulcimer).

Here's a modern Yang Chin:

Here's a tiple, which looks just like mine (It's like a bandurria, but guitar shaped instead of tear-drop shaped):
