ANZAC Day
Today is AN ZAC Day in Austrralia.
It is not a celebration of war , but rather a way of remembering the sacrifes made by soldiers and many others during the time of war.
Often the real victims of wars are not those who die on the battlefield or civilian bombings but those who returned and lived with what they had seen for the rest of their lives.
Many soldiers returned from World War 2 with what is now known as post traumatic stress syndrome.
It was not understood and many ex soldiers had to try and rejoin a world which was really unawaree of how what they had seen affected them.
A lot of these former soldiers had much trouble settling back to civilian life. The found it hard to settle down and maintain relationships.
A lot would suffer depression and take it out on their partners and children , while many others developed an addictive personality and became heavy smokers and or drinkers.

Re: ANZAC Day
As you say.
The problems of returning Aussie and Kiwi servicemen will have been common, of course, for the servicemen of other countrise involved in the last century's 2 World Wars.
Didn't the term ANZAC originate in WW1?
When do New Zealanders celebrate ANZAC Day?

Re: ANZAC Day
I was trying to refer to all returned soldiers , from all wars, however I guess it sounded like I was only referring to Australia . I thought for a while my father was unique in not wanting to talk about it , how ever I have discoved that for most ex servicemen it is the same as they have wittnessed horrors that are so extreme.felix wrote:As you say.

The term did originate in WW! and as far as I know it is celebrated in NewZealand on the same day , but I am not 100% sure.
