Mikhail Svetlov, of course.

It should go without saying that the pinhed is referring to the basso Михаил Анатольевич Светлов, not the jewish guy Михаил Аркадьевич Светлов, whose real name was Scheinkman.

There's a world of difference between Анатольевич and Аркадьевич study .

I can already hear Yakima accusing Михаил Анатольевич Светлов of being anti-semitik. Shocked

This is a lie, last night Svetlov told us that Hitler liked Imre Kalman so much that he had him arrested by the Gestapo and offered to make him an "honorary aryan" (Svetlov can't pronounce "honorary" ).

So Kalman caught a train to Paris, then the Germans moved into Paris and Kalman moved to Hollywood.

Svetlov thought Kalman made the right moves, so Svetlov is not anti-Semitic--even if he is a Slav and a Russian. bounce

Svelte [aka Mikhail Svetlov] seemed very energized by the end of the concert. Very Happy

Svetlana [same root] said he told her "Your orchestra is having much of the energy" (he didn't say "much of the polish and elegance," but we'll take what we can get).

Google got a bit tripped up there--evidently some confusion about what "spunk" is.

Russians who remember Khrushchev also know and love Imre Kalman, who wrote just as pretty as Franz Lehar, and more gypsy-like.

The reason Kalman became so popular was because of a 1958 movie starring Georg Otz as the mysterious masked man "Mister X." Suspect

Svelte/Svetlov told our audience that he is first time singing this aria in America. Very Happy

Svetlana says goofing-off time is enough already, and working time starts again. bounce

Dear friends,
Happy New Year!
I hope you are all ready to restart our orchestra rehearsals.
I was working very hard during all these winter holidays and the program for June concerts is nearly done.
This Wednesday rehearsal we will be practicing the music you got in 2016/ and you practiced all of them a lot past two-Three weeks, right?/ and the new music I am going to bring this Wednesday.
Here is the plan:
Kamarinskaya by Glinka
Romance by Glinka
Vocalise by Rachmaninoff
Prelude by Rachmaninoff
Danse Macabre/ Dance of the Death
----------------
The Glory!/Slavsya! by Glinka from "Ivan Susanin"
Casta Diva by Bellini from Norma
O mio babbino caro... by Puccini
Habanera by Bizet from Carmen

You also would need to put in your folders the pices we did in the past:
Radetsky March
Guditta
I could have danced all night

See you all on Wednesday! I would need to have the whole orchestra coming to practice every Wednesday! Winter holidays are over let's start practicing!
Thank you!
Svetlana

The National Symphony  Orchestra decided to do a performance of “The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh” by Rimsky-Korsakov with guest conductor Mark Elder.

This is a big deal, because the score calls for two balalaika players. This means the NSO had to call Andrey for the gig (him and that girl from the “Barynya” group).

Here is what the reviewer had to say about today’s “iridescent” performance:

Elder, NSO explore Stravinsky roots with iridescent performances

Elder, the principal conductor of Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, elicited some rarefied, subtly blended sounds in his first visit since 2014. He often seemed to keep the strings in check, which produced a gossamer, shimmering sound in the Prelude to Act I. This allowed the woodwind solos to peep through the texture, as with the croaking bassoon, skittering piccolo, and clarinet cuckoo call. Two balalaika players, invited to stand for their strumming solo in the second movement, added an authentic folk music touch to the sounds of the Wedding Procession of Fevroniya, heavy on the sleigh bells and double glockenspiel.

The reviews of Andrey's (and Yelena's) performance keep pouring in. cheers

" ... The most innovative element on the program was actually the oldest: Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh” is not often performed, and this was the first time the NSO had played the suite the composer created from its music. Premiered only two years before “The Firebird,” in 1907, “Kitezh” shares some of the latter work’s colorful folkloric flavor, complete with a pair of balalaikas. But for all of its sense of languor and mystery — the composer was trying to weave together the religious and the mystical and the legendary in a sort of hyper-legend — it’s a straightforward work in its handling of its basic melodic material, rife with appealing sounds and themes. Elder and the orchestra made a case for the idea that it should be heard more often."

The folks who where there say not to sit right up front, because from there you can't see Andrey and Yelena when they stand up.

As you know, tonight is the night of the annual Russian Ball downtown. What a Face drunken

Here is an orchestra-eye view (Andrey on the left); but we have to play without Andrey tonight, because he's still doing that NSO thing.

The NSO guest conductor Mark Elder described the Balalaika players as "rather brilliant" (he's English, you know ).

Who knew the online version has so many more pictures--in color, too.

Andrey wishes he was here instead of playing with the NSO.
