As arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in the 1920s, when Whiteman commissioned Gershwin to write "Rhapsody In Blue," Ferd got the job of arranging Gershwin's duo-piano score for the orchestra.

Some people, such as Michael Tilson Thomas and the pinhed, think that Ferd's orchestration of the "Rhapsody" is still the best.
