Carrier pigeon
(from wiki)
When used as carrier pigeons in pigeon post a message is written on thin light paper and rolled into a small tube attached to the bird's leg. Pigeons can only go back to one "mentally marked" point that they have identified as their home. So "pigeon mail" can only work when the sender is actually holding the receiver's pigeons.
In war
Birds were used extensively during World War I.
A B-type bus from London converted into a Pigeon loft for use in Northern France and Belgium during the Great war.
Soldier with message and carrier pigeon during World War I.
Eighty-two homing pigeons were dropped into Holland with the First Airborne Division Signals as part of Operation Market Garden in World War II. The pigeons' loft was located in London which would have required them to fly 240 miles to deliver their messages. Also in World War II, hundreds of homing pigeons with the Confidential Pigeon Service were airdropped into northwest Europe to serve as intelligence vectors for local resistance agents. Birds played a vital part in the Invasion of Normandy as radios could not be used for fear of vital information being intercepted by the enemy.

Re: return
Moonie, I really enjoyed just now looking at the pictures you posted. They are all very smart and clever. I can't tell you how relieved I am that you came back. I like you so much. I don't post much lately but I read everyone's posts.
9:10 am and off to walk the dog now. I would have gotten an earlier start but I was talking with Tom. We have been having crummy weather for about a week. Ninety degrees and very humid and thunderstorms nearly every day. I am taking the girls to all get haircuts at 1 pm. Very expensive, but Tom wants them to have them and I can't argue. I used to cut their hair myself.
Bye for now and so glad you're back!

The Second Coming
W.B. Yeats
TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Re: return
I'm guessing volver is 'return' in Spanish.
After her death, a mother returns to her home town in order to fix the situations she couldn't resolve during her life.
Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Starring Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura"

Re: return
According to pinz' definition, I think we'd both be suitable Almodóvar girls (or in my case, 'woman').
