You can’t lose as badly as the Arizona Football Cardinals did without having enough blame to go around. But given his stat line, the visibility of his position, and the questions throughout his career arc that this season was supposed to shake, this will be remembered as QB Carson Palmer’s personal meltdown.

The 49-15 blowout loss was a true team effort. But the questions for head coach Bruce Arians circled around Palmer, who tossed four interceptions and lost two fumbles in a truly Delhommean nightmare. Did the pressure get to him? Was he feeling the effects of a dislocated finger suffered last month? Arians didn’t mess around with his answer.

“Carson didn’t lose the damn game,” Arians said. “There’s nothing wrong with his damn finger. You can keep them questions. We just didn’t play well enough. Our best players, especially, didn’t play well enough.”

True enough. His offensive line didn’t do Palmer any favors. Nor did Larry Fitzgerald’s drops. The defense couldn’t make tackles, allowing Carolina a series of huge plays, and the secondary couldn’t stop Greg Olsen. And for all of Palmer’s turnovers, none may have been as back-breaking as Patrick Peterson’s second-quarter muffed punt, just when it looked like the Cardinals might be clawing back some momentum. To lose by 34 points, especially in a conference championship game, you usually have to get beaten on pretty much every unit.

But, Palmer. “This is as low as you can feel,” he said afterward. This was what he’d waited his whole career for, through tough times with the Bengals and the Raiders, two teams he functionally quit on when it was clear they were stuck in neutral. These Cardinals fielded the most talented roster Palmer’s ever played with, but this was all new to him: it was the first road playoff game of his career. And if he came out nervous and conservative against Green Bay last week, he was recklessly aggressive against a Panthers team primed to take advantage. “I kept digging us a hole we couldn’t get out of it,” Palmer said.

Palmer insisted his health was fine, but he hasn’t been the same passer since dislocating his right index finger in Week 15 against Philadelphia. Before the injury: 32 touchdowns and nine interceptions. After the injury (though against exclusively good defenses): seven TDs and nine INTs.

It was a very bad night against a very good team, and should not serve as an isolated referendum on Palmer’s curious career. But he is running out of time to make a better impression: he’s 36 years old, an age when it’s rare for a QB to have his career-best season, and even rarer to keep it up. The Cardinals are good enough to be back here next year, but even if this loss wasn’t Palmer’s fault, they’re not going to win without him ... ?

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Five days before a documentary alleged that quarterback Peyton Manning and other star athletes had used performance-enhancing drugs, two men hired by Manning’s lawyers visited the parents of the documentary’s key witness. Both men wore black overcoats and jeans and, according to a 911 call from the house that evening, one initially said he was a law enforcement officer but didn’t have a badge.

On Sunday night, the Minnesota Vikings will play their first regular season home game at their billion-dollar stadium in downtown Minneapolis. To celebrate, the team plans a full afternoon of festivities outside the venue and a Super Bowl-style extended halftime show at the game itself, with performances by the Minnesota Orchestra and a tribute to native son Prince Nelson. Also, The Mountain That Rides will be there to lead the crowd in an “Icelandic war chant,” which sounds cool and also a bit like the sort of tradition you’d introduce if you wanted to solidify your team’s brand identification among white nationalists.

The Dead Zone would also like to celebrate the Vikings, and congratulate them on successfully getting a half-billion dollars in public subsidies, so last year we bought a “Legacy Brick,” one of thousands of personalized commemorative markers purchased by fans and placed in a plaza just outside the stadium.

The Dead Zone brick has been installed. Our tribute to the Vikings will now stand forever, or until the team threatens to move to Berlin in order to force Anoka County to cover half the costs of constructing a $25 billion stadium and entertainment complex in Coon Rapids, in about 20 years.

Now, like in your “augmented reality” Pokemon apps, it is up to you to go out into the real world and find it.

Our brick is not signed, but you should know it when you see it, if you are familiar with the Minnesota Vikings franchise, and with The Dead Zone. Still, with over 12,000 bricks outside the stadium, this will not be an easy task. The team has placed “Vikings Greatest Moments Markers” as guideposts around the plaza. Here’s a hint to finding ours: It’s somewhere in the sections denoted by greatest moments markers 10 (the Vikings’ loss in Super Bowl 8 ) through 13 (the Vikings’ loss in Super Bowl 11).

Send us your best guesses by Monday, September 19, 2016 to tips@deathstalker.org

“Emotionally on the sideline, in between the series, Odell Beckhams, Junior needs to do a better job. That’s all of our responsibilities, mine included. But Odell Beckhams, Junior needs to control his emotions better and be less of a distraction to Odell Beckhams, Junior and his teammates. It’s our job to help him with that process. It takes a village. Communication, having a variety of different people, different coaches, staff members that he can talk to and communicate with ... ... just help Odell Beckhams, Junior direct his focus.”

Let Us Mention The Legend of Ekalavya

The story of Ekalavya is familiar to most, but remains an underrated sub plot from the Indian epic Mahabharata. Ekalavya is a tribal boy from the Magadha Clan with a natural talent for archery. He approaches Guru Dronacharya, the renowned archery Coach of the Kingdom of Hastinapur, for his tutelage. Hastinapur is the home of the royal dynasties of the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Guru Dronacharya, while impressed with the boy, rejects his application for a couple of reasons:

Ekalavya belongs to a lower caste.
The Magadha community has been historically hostile to the Hastinapur Kingdom and Dronacharya’s services have been exclusively retained by the Pandavas & Kauravas. In other words, Dronacharya can’t take students of his own.

Denied Dronacharya’s tutelage, and living in the forest without any facilities, Ekalavya nonetheless continues his training. He creates a clay statue of the Guru and practices in front of this idol, drawing strength from its presence. With the passage of time, he becomes incredibly adept with the bow and arrow.

One day, Guru Dronacharya and the Pandavas camp in the forest for a night. A barking dog disturbs their sleep. Suddenly, there is a swishing sound of arrows in the dark followed by an eerie silence. The Pandavas see the dog silently scamper towards them with its entire mouth sewed shut by a set of arrows. Incredibly, the dog’s mouth is closed in a way that it remains completely unscathed. Dronacharya is amazed by this feat of archery and seeks out the archer. He comes upon his own statue in a clearing. He meets Ekalavya and learns of his training.

While moved by the boy’s story, at the back of his mind, Dronacharya remembers an earlier promise he had made to Arjuna (one of the five Pandava brothers). He had promised Arjuna that he would make him the best archer in the region. Sensing a threat to this promise, he demands that Ekalavya chop off his thumb as ‘gurudakshina’, the mandatory offering (‘dakshina’) made by a pupil to his teacher (‘guru’). Ekalavya is well aware that archery is impossible without his right thumb. But without hesitating for a second, he chops it off and hands it over to the man he considers his Guru. In a matter of seconds, his dreams of becoming a world renowned archer had shattered.

***

The Dronacharya-Ekalavya episode poses certain thought provoking questions. How could Dronacharya be so heartless and abuse the unquestioning trust placed upon him? How could Ekalavya be so naïve or trusting in the first place?

This story has implications even today. Teachers in India play a very strong role in making or breaking their students. This responsibility is heightened in sports, where players have a limited timeframe to achieve mastery over their craft. When incorrect skills are taught, or bad habits allowed to linger, at best a player loses time, as he unlearns his mistakes and relearns the correct fundamentals. At worst, a player risks serious injuries and the chance to earn a livelihood i.e. get returns on his valuable investment of money and years of toil.

Contrary to what people may conclude, Ekalavya’s story is that of triumph. What many don’t know is that he went on to learn how to fire arrows with his feet. To us, Ekalavya stands for unwavering determination and pure love in the pursuit of one’s craft. He continued honing his skills despite knowing fully well that he would never be as good as those ‘Arjunas’ who used their hands. Ekalavya learned for the joy of learning, not for the fame, popularity or money that often makes us lose sight of why we started off in the first place. It is said that people only remember the guy who finished first. But what about all those who were denied an equal chance?

Our Goal

At Ekalavyas, we believe in free learning for all. Learning should happen at the right time, in the right way, to the right people and from the right instructors. In the larger sense, we firmly believe that those individuals who learn for the pure joy of learning not only become successful role models in their chosen field, but also grow as human beings— becoming kind, generous, happy and peaceful. They are not limited by petty constraints, contribute willingly to society and grow into wise old men and women. We want to create a society full of such Ekalavyas, where free thinking individuals rationally choose to live amongst one another for individual and community gain. At Ekalavyas, we not only believe in an ideal world, we actually make it happen.
