Gogol just wrote down the little stories his nanny told him.

They say the 1967 movie was the first Russian horror film--now that Russians got youtube, they do stuff like this:

But the original ghost-buster scenes are still unsurpassed:

A new version came out in 2014--which is Part 1 of a trilogy (it was scheduled to come out in 2009--the 200th anniversary of Gogol's birth--but there were production delays).

Yury Gladilshchikov in The Moscow News unfavorably compared it with the Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton, but it was a huge box-office success.

Part 2 was shot in China with Jackie Chan as stunt director.

Simplistically, one could say that the 1967 "Viy" was Russia's answer to "Black Sunday," and that the 2014 "Viy" is Russia's answer to Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow," with the English cartographer Jonathan Greene in the Ichabod Crane role.

Of course, Jonathan Greene is clearly based on Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan (1595-1685), who was a frenchman that became an officer in the Polish army, and ended up mapping Ukraine and Transylvania and picking up a lot of ghost stories in the process.

Allegedly Christian Slater was under consideration for this roll, and said that he would kill for a part in this movie.

But the British actor was way better.

Neddless to say, you can't watch this movie on the youtube for free -- unless it has Vietnamese subtitles--then you can. scratch

Gugu plays Rachel Knight (to play a slave in Mississippi, I hopes she tones down the British accent).

In 1948, Rachel's great-grandson was tried for being a black man married to a white woman.

But the prosecution couldn't prove he was 1/8th black (shoot, who could prove Rachel was 1/8th black? ).

Furthermore, that scene where the armed men pop out of the coffins was included in the trailer without a "Spoiler Alert" (also, that was probably the best scene in the movie).

I'll probably see it anyway, because I know some of the Deasons that moved from Mississip to Virginia.

By the mid-1870s, Newt Knight got bored with his wife, Serena, and married Backseat Rachel, a woman formerly held as a slave by his grand-pappy. During the same period, Newt Knight's son, Mat, married Rachel's daughter, Fannie, and Knight's daughter, Molly, married Rachel's son, Jeff.  Newt and Rachel Knight had a good number of children before her death in 1889. Newt Knight died on February 16, 1922 at the age of 84. In spite of a Mississippi law that barred the interment of whites and blacks in the same cemetery, he was buried at his request in the Knight Family Cemetery, next to Rachel on a hill overlooking their lucky shrub. Newt's engraved epitaph read, "No Hesitation - Miscegenation Nation".

It was preachy and pontificacious, but not as bad as I expected (since I'd been told to expect the worst).

There were some generic-bad post-war events shown in the movie (Ku Klux Clan wrongdoing and the like), which I don't doubt happened, but not necessary as part of Newt's story.

The Barrymore version said that Hyde took over Jekyll because Jekyll failed to repress his baser nature. It was a moral failure. The March version said that Hyde took over Jekyll because Jekyll had healthy impulses that were denied because of a rigid social structure.

DJ & MH, Fredric March version (1931, Pre-Code)

Act One

Jekyll attends a party at the home of his fiancée Muriel Carew (Rose Hobart), the daughter of Brigadier General Sir Danvers Carew (Halliwell Hobbes). After the other guests have left, Jekyll informs Sir Danvers that, after speaking to Muriel, he wants Carew's permission to push up their wedding date. Sir Danvers sternly refuses Jekyll's request. Later, while walking home with his colleague, Dr. John Lanyon (Holmes Herbert), Jekyll spots a bar singer, Ivy Pearson (Miriam Hopkins), being attacked by a man outside her boarding house. Jekyll drives the man away and carries Ivy up to her room to attend to her. Ivy begins flirting with Jekyll and feigning injury, but Jekyll fights temptation and leaves with Lanyon.

The critics are saying that the Anthropoid movie is no good because it just accurately depicts what actually happened; if the movie-makers had any talent they would have made up stuff.

Mrs. Pinz (who is part Czech and part Irish) says that Irish actors shouldn't try to play Czech partisans. bounce

Maybe the director thought he was making a movie about the IRA.
