Why would a polar bear be in need of panties? That just doesn't make any sense. A hat I can see, but panties, come on! I'm beginning to think this tale is very tall.

You don't like euphemisms? OK--those bears are going after Miss Panties little hind end. pirat

And she's a goner, for sure. All it will take is the right bear to get the job done. bounce

Euphemisms? Are they those crackers they serve at Roman churches? If so, then yes, they are delicious.

We continue with our documentary.

Date: February 2nd, 2001

Place: Campus of the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland

Who: Professor Doktor Роальд Зиннурович Сагдеев (pronounced ROH-wald Zin-NUR-yevich Sag-DYEH-yev), Distinguished Professor of physics, member of the US National Academy and Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, member of the Supervisory Council of the International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe, Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm, where he assists clients with issues involving Russia and countries in the former Soviet Union.

Dr. Sagdeev sits in his comfortable office in College Park, finishing up his MacRibb sandwich and washing it down with a diet Pepsi.

Refreshed, he awaits his first appointment of the afternoon--a certain Mr. Precinct, who introduced himself as a member of the staff of Indiana Senator Richard Lugar (Long John's favorite Senator--although a Republican), charged with the responsibility of implementing Senator Lugar's Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program.

Dr. Sagdeev is eager to hear what Mr. Precinct has to say, because the goals of the CTR program--including global nuclear disarmamant--are near and dear to his heart.

I believe I already mentioned that Dr. Sageev and Susan Eisenhower had recently married, after they became acquainted at an international conference in 1990:

Precinct and Sagdeev. Two canny and experienced men of the world.

It goes without saying that neither would dream of meeting with the other without careful preparation. Suspect

Dr. Sagdeev, for his part, had picked up a load of documents describing the progress to date and future plans for the Nunn-Lugar program for assistance to the former Soviet Union's efforts to reduce it's nuclear arsenal.

The scorecard was impressive:

But the anticipated expenditures were truly awesome: What a Face

And just like Dr. Sagdeev, Precinct had been doing his homework.

As we know, Precinct is a foreigner, so he looks like this:

... but he is also a master of disguises:

Precinct knows that when he meets with Sagdeev, he must look the part of a staffer for a Republican Senator from Indiana.

Like any diligent researcher, he starts by Googling the search term "Republican." The results were somewhat confusing:

But Precinct kept searching until he finally found the proper attire for a Senate staffer under the search term "casual Friday:"

But Precinct could not overcome his disgust for the American look, and fell back on the tried and true.

But Precinct's stuffy appearance didn't do anything to break the ice:

Dr. Sagdeev likes to roller-blade in Santa Barbara then take in some pints with P (that's his pet name from him...you know how British dudes are really saucy with each other).

Place: Hard Times Cafe, College Park, MD:

Sagdeev -- So tell me, Dr.P., what do you think of our nightlife?

Precinct -- I must say it's quite lively, Dr. S., but this particular ... how shall I say this ...

Sagdeev -- I believe the American colloquialism for this type of establishment is "joint."

Precinct -- Precisely. This particular "joint" is a bit low on the social scale for my taste.

Sagdeev -- That's because this is a college community, Dr. P. I used to know a girl named Svetlana that would have said "This Joint is Jumpin'."

Precinct -- Surely not a Russian girl.

Sagdeev -- She was an admirer of an American pianist by the name of Fats Waller.

Precinct -- Ah yes. He was a great favorite back in my home town in ... Indiana.

Sagdeev -- Can it be true that you're from indiana?

Precinct -- Most certainly, Dr. S.

Sagdeev -- Jolly Good.

Precinct decides it's time to get down to brass tacks:

Precinct -- "This is not a bad location for confidential discussions, actually."

Sagdeev -- "Hiding in plain sight, so to speak?"

Precinct -- "Precisely. Many people can see us, but few would guess we were discussing anything of importance. And the crowd noise makes us inaudible."

Sagdeev -- "One would think you lived in the Soviet Union." Cool

Precinct -- "I have been involved in a good deal of "sensitive" work with my present employer." Cool

Sagdeev -- "I'm listening."

Mack ripped off his headphones in frustration. He had bugged Sagdeev's office, and he could hear everything as clear as a bell until Precinct decided they had to go out for a drink.

Now he was trying to hear what they were saying by means of a microphone planted in a napkin dispenser at the Hard Times Cafe, but the screaming students were making his job impossible. Mad
