Eric Reed is back with "The Baddest Monk"

Post  Yakima Canutt on Sat Feb 28, 2015 8:11 am

A year after releasing The Dancing Monk, the pianist has issued The Baddest Monk. Green Chimneys features an unusual rhythm, one that feels drawn from bebop, marches and West African music.

"a Monk connection" ? hmmm let us see ... hmmm .... pianist Eric Reed has claimed that Monk's music makes it possible "to travel way out there, if you're willing to go where it can take you." On The Baddest Monk, Reed and his colleagues prove more than willing. The Monk classics recorded here illustrate the breadth of Reed's thought on one of the most idiosyncratic of jazz composers. Reed and his ensemble are able to penetrate to the very core the Monk's writing, dismantle its component parts and reassemble them so that they contain not only the essence of Monk, but that of the players themselves, skeeet.

Somebody asked Dr. Billy Taylor "What is it that monk does, and why do we love it so much?"

Dr. Billy started by saying "I can't tell you why you like it so much, ..." [note that Billy didn't say WE, suggesting maybe that HE didn't love it so much Suspect ]

Then Dr. Billy explained some of Monk's idiosyncracies, such as playing the 7th chord with only two notes--the tonic and the 7th below it--so there was no third in the chord.

I thought Dr. Billy was being coldly analytical and unenthusiastic--I was surprised he didn't seem to have a single positive word. Shocked
