Why do American jazz musicians spend so much time in Europe?

Post  pinhedz on Mon Jan 26, 2015 3:17 am

Is it because a prophet is never appreciated in his own land?

Or is it because Europeans don't really get it, but are trying, because they've heard it's cool? scratch

And do those factors make the pay and treatment better?

Some (like Sidney Bechet) went there because they were wanted on felony charges.

But many went because the Europeans considered jazz to be "Art" (with a capital "A"), and Americans thought it was just dance muzik.

Larry Johnson had to move to Europe by 1990--for two reasons:

1. He could play music there,

2. He could make records there.
