They say that Tim Burton has made a movie about the big eyes artist (I remember when these were popular):

Who knew that Margaret Keane painted portraits of big movie stars? Shocked

Probably many people knew, but not the pinhed.

Natalie Woods eyes look biggish, but not huge:

Joan Crawford has very prominent eyebrows:

Margaret Keane did this portrait of Susan Keane when Susan was a kid.

Susan is now working on a documentary film to rebut Tim Burton's "Big Eyes."

Susan says Margaret is a forger and fabricator; an ingrate who, driven by jealousy and greed,  turned on Walter Keane ("the artistic visionary Walter Keane") after he kindly took her under his wing and taught her how to paint.

Christoph Waltz is from Vienna, the World Centre of Civilization, so it took a long time for Tim Burton to explain to him how Keane was really a good painter.

Tim never actually said that Keane was a good painter.

ACTUALLY TIM DID SAY THAT, ACCORDING TO CRISTOPH WALTZ.

SOMEWHAT.  IT DEPENDS ON THE DEFINITION OF "GOOD"

I see that Waltz now owns a Keane and says he loves it--which is not necessarily the same as saying its good.
I love Corn Curls and Snickerdoodles.

Variety Studios
Ralph Fiennes in conversation with Cristoph Waltz

Cristoph explains how, coming from Vienna, Keanes were not "art"

But to Tim, coming from Burbank, Keanes were "art"

Then Tim explained to Cristoph how there was no reason to look down on Keanes

Then Cristoph said he "fully got it"

I would imagine further thoughts from Tim on the subject are widely available on the networks.

To say that Keane's are "not Art" is like saying that McDonald's burgers are "not Food." Rolling Eyes

in the context of the statement, Waltz is using the term "art" to refer to "fine art"

so, really the analogous statement would be something like "McDonald's burgers are not cuisine"

re: Corn Curls, Cheetos ... pointing to premise of "it's crap but I like it"

it is my understanding that Tim Burton's estimation of Keanes is higher than "it's crap but I like it"

aesthetic similarities between Keanes and Tim Burton's oft big-eyed drawings would seem to buttress this conclusion

Quite right--but I was not trying to speak for Tim Burton, I was responding to Waltz on my own account (equating art to fine art makes the pinhedz eyes roll--like this Rolling Eyes ).

Burton has said that "Kitch is art," and the pinhed heartily agrees. Whether or not kitch is good is a separate question.
And the pinhed might have a higher opinion of Cheetos than you have guessed.
