The pinhed ponders creation of a new thread

Post  pinhedz on Sun Jul 06, 2014 12:58 am

After an extensive search, the pinhed has concluded that ATU does not have--and perhaps never did have Shocked -- a "Red Barn protest" / "Battle of Dinkytown" thread.

The question is, should there be one? Or is it better to leave the past behind and move on to the future (which would be, of course, "The Battle of Dinkytown Part II").

Interested parties cast your votes.

One consideration, of course, is how dull is this topic?

Here's a tourist who went there, ordered a burger, and pronounced it dull--and so it is, to a dull man. Razz

Curiously, there has not been a single vote in favor of the "Battle of Dinkytown"/"Red Barn Protest" thread. scratch

Perhaps some context is needed: Smile

I looks like the police had their egg McMuffins all ready on the hood of their car.

So, did that mean the battle was over? Not on your life.

So, what exactly was it all about, anyway?

Was it about the Class Struggle and the bullying tactics of the business corporations? (answer -- yes);

Was it about fast-food creep, historical preservation and community activism? (answer -- yes);

Was it about the little people speaking up and having a voice? (yeah -- I reckon);

Was it about the Viet Nam protests and the Kent State Massacre? (hmm --  scratch )

This little girl (no longer so little) is still a bit confused, but she sort of figures it was ALL OF THE ABOVE.

And she is not certain whether her dad got tear-gassed because he was protesting, or if he was just innocently on his way home from his office at the University (not likely  Razz ):

So, about this "historical preservation thing," if you've seen one single-storey plain-brick store front, aren't they all pretty much the same?

This has a powerful bearing on "The Battle of Dinkytown: Part II."

But, objectively, since the fast-food guy fled like a scared rabbit, the new 1971 brick storefront works about as well as 1920 one did. Cool

The book store lady says it's about "Music, Food and Books." She would have been young in 1970. Neutral

At 3:50 the young kid says: "Vescios has been here for .. oh God … years man!"

Years? Vescios is older than the pinhead, man. bounce

Lazy Bill Lucas used to play at Vescios all the time.

In his later years, Lazy Bill mostly hung out with young white guys.

After all, his kids and grandkids only cared about Motown. Neutral

But let's not get ahead of our story. bounce

After the buildings came down (at 4:00 am) what happened next? It isn't difficult to guess.

While the pinhed was rotting in prison, the flower children took over site of the demolition and planted a garden. flower

Needless to say, the bad PR and publicity destroyed the fast food franchise.

And then the mural painters moved in to commemorate the "peace garden:

And for good measure, they decided to commemorate 4th street and Bob's candid opinion of 4th street (after all, if Bob hates you, you probably did something right Razz ):

I'm sorry to report that the Red Barn protest  mural is in bad shape these days, and the patchwork repairs are not helping matters. Neutral

Judging by the trailer, Al thinks it was all about Viet Nam, rather than fast food:

Critics mostly like old Al's movie:

THE DINKYTOWN UPRISING

⋆⋆⋆ out of four stars

Unrated • Theater: St. Anthony Main.

How did the simple prospect of a burger chain moving into a quaint university neighborhood turn into a five-week occupation by students and a clash with Minneapolis police?

Timing was everything. It was the spring of 1970, when campuses nationwide erupted in protests over the U.S. invasion of Cambodia, and four kids were killed at Kent State.

Al Milgrom’s timing was perfect, too. Minnesota’s godfather of art cinema, now 92, stalked the scene with camera in hand as a ragtag company of activists and hippies defied court orders to establish a “People’s Hotel” in two buildings slated for demolition to make way for a Red Barn hamburger joint. Decades in the making, Milgrom’s documentary combines his dynamic footage with contemporary interviews to make a case for the broader significance of what might seem a mere footnote.

Mostly he succeeds. The vintage vignettes convey a parallel with the modern “Occupy” movement, as respectful young people in jeans and flannels deliver their anti-corporate, pro-grassroots message in a quintessential Minnesota way. Occasionally the film veers too far into boomer introspection, but viewers interested in Minnesota history will find plenty to love — including the irony that the one surviving Red Barn in Minneapolis is now a Vietnamese restaurant.

Off the top of my head: there is a Bob Dylan / Dinkytown connection...just can't think of what it is.

Quite a few connections, including the fact that positively 4th street could be either Dinkytown (where Bob roomed above the drug store on 4th street) or Greenwhich Village (where Bob hung out after leaving Minneapolis).

The "uprising" was just a few storefronts down 4th street from Bob's place.

The city fathers decided to commemorate Bob with a mural on 4th street:

Like the article says, Al Milgrom is merely a"local legend." Is anyone outside of Minnesota likely to see his movie? Not likely. geek

Nonetheless, the Cohen Brothers (also local legends) put a character named Al Milgrom in their movie "Inside LLewyn Davis." Shocked Suspect
