Seeger? Schmeeger.
From 1939:
(At least, though he got virtually nothing financially from the song, Solomon's heirs are now benefitting from some of the huge sums earned, mainly through Disney's use of it in The Lion King, by his song - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Linda )
PS: Those suits! - are they zoot or wot?!

^ Though the Welsh original would not pronounce it as Rimney - it's Rumney, bach, innit!

How interesting is that?
I just love the way that song has the names of those Welsh villages.
It's so pretty & sad.
They will plunder will-nilly,
Cry the bells of Caerphilly.
They have fangs, they have teeth,
Shout the loud bells of Neath.
Even God is uneasy,
Say the moist bells of Swansea.
And what will you give me?
Say the sad bells of Rhymney.
Who doesn't like John Denver?

Did you ever hear Bob Dylan's recording?
It is nice.
on tree w/ roots.
John Denver sings it beautifully.
Would have loved to hear him sing.
Never saw him.

Am thinking you are correct.
His vocals excellent also.

^^Both very nice. Marlene D wonderful.
I went to parochial high school and elementary, & remember singing that song during Mass @ school, late 70's.
Not a Catholic Hymn

That must have been when the liturgy committees decided they could reach the young people better by playing guitars instead of the organ--I remember hearing Bob's "I Shall Be Released" during mass.
I have a vague memory singing 'blowing in the wind' & 'if I had a hammer', in mass.
do clearly remember 'Michael row the boat..' & 'Kumbaya'.
love this, don't think it was around in the 70's.
'Lord, you have come to the seashore,
neither searching for the rich nor the wise,
desiring only that I should follow.
O, Lord, with your eyes set upon me,
gently smiling, you have spoken my name;
all I longed for I have found by the water,
at your side, I will seek other shores'
