Sports teams perpetuating offensive ethnic stereotypes

Post  pinhedz on Mon Dec 02, 2013 10:28 am

In response to protests from Scandinavian Americans, the Minnesota football team has replaced the offensive Viking caricature, previously used as the team logo, with a brand new logo:

The Washington team has been advised to make a similar change, because it's the right thing to do bounce

At another website I post at...I wrote as soon as the ultraliberals get rid of the Red Skins name / logo they will go to work on the Vikings name / logo because of it's violent (in their minds) imagery. This is the same crowd who doesn't even watch football and would like to change the National Anthem tho they have never lifted a finger to defend the country.

I am of Irish decent and for some reason, I don't find this offensive, quite the contrary !

A sports fan finally explained this thing to me--the Indigenous Americans are hating on the "Redskins" name right now because the Indigenous do not want to be associated with losers.

If the team would start winning, then the name would be more popular with the Indigenous.

I used to know lots of Indigenous Americans back in the old country (not so many where I am now) and they were mostly like these guys (not Chiefs or Chairmen, just regular braves).

Who wants to be the one to tell these folks they aren't going to have a team named after them anymore? Neutral

Now, let's hear from the operators of the Cache Creek Casino Resort, the hotel, spa and golf course, C2 Steak and Seafood, Chang Shou, The Sports Page, Harvest Buffet, Canyon Cafe, The Deli, Asian Kitchen, Sweets Etc., Loco Express, etc. [They must be the most truly aware among all the indigenous, yes? Suspect ]

While I don't doubt that Marshall McKay and James Kinter are of Native American descent (partly, at least), they sound a whole lot like a pair of white politicians (but I agree with Kinter that the question goes beyond the Yocha Dehe nation):

No rock group would call themselves "The Asians." Rolling Eyes
But we have a local all-Asian rock group called "The Slants." lol!

And I am also a fan of the "Ink Spots" and the "Chocolate Drops," not to mention "Muddy Waters." afro

yes, ethnic groups are allowed to have fun with their own ethnicity. it's generally considered a different fish kettle when a majority ethnic group has fun with the ethnicity of a minority group.

maybe white people will have more latitude for racial caricatures when their numbers fall below 50% of the total population in 2044, or maybe the Emperor of of the United States of North Mexico, Oprah Yang del Barco II, will be even more draconian in cartoon prohibition.

a fairly recent development, it was still OK in 1987

(animated shows South Park, Family Guy, and American Dad still do these kind of yuks, but they are less popular now with the under 30 crowd, who tend to be much more concerned about Social Justicia and a future to believe in)

Richard Dadier: That will be enough of that West.
Pete V. Morales: What did I do , anyhow?
Artie West: Alright, sit down... spic.
Belazi: You heard him, greaseball.
Pete V. Morales: At least I'm no Irish Mick!
[Belazi throws a magazine at Morales]
Richard Dadier: I said, that will be enough!
Richard Dadier: Now, you pick up that magazine, Belazi. Pick it up! I wanna get one thing very clear in this classroom. There's not gonna be any name calling here. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Now you understand that? All of ya!
Pete V. Morales: I was just kidding.
Richard Dadier: Yeah, I know you're just kidding. That's how things start. Like a street fight. Somebody pushes somebody in fun. Somebody pushes back, and soon you got a street fight with no kidding. That's the same way with name-calling.

All right, West, look. You're of Irish decent. So is Murphy over there. You call him a Mick. He calls you a Mick. Suppose Miller called you a Mick. Is that all right? Then you call him a nigger

i was referring not to general ethnic slurs, but white people making zany comedy out of ethnics. i.e., when I was a youngster in the 1980s, it was a common site on SNL for Dana Carvey and other gringos to perform as kooky orientals and wacky latins. (blackface not so much)

It they did that now, there would be protests and boycottings.

Sangeet says what about Jack Black in Nacho Libre (2006)

I say that film shows a deep appreciation and respect for Mexican culture, so the number of outraged bloggers is probably (hopefully) relatively few

When Will Ferrell performed in the Spainish lang Mexican style melodrama CASA DE MI PADRE, he did his very best to make his Spainish as bueno as possible

Dadio was talking about exactly the same thing -- Morales said he was joking:

i was referring to the parameters of acceptability for professional comedic entertainers- which have a different code of comportment than real life people in the street and the yard

Not really seein' why it should be different. Spiro was allowed to call his buddy "The Fat Jap" because they were buddies--not because Spiro was a professional entertainer.

i am making no pronouncements on what should be. i am making a historical observation that by the 1980s, ethnic slurs were forbidden, but ethnic caricatures by white people in film/TV were still OK. And now in 2016, ethnic caricatures by white people in film/tv are no longer OK.

And yes, I understand there was a movie in which Glenn Ford gave advice to school children. Thank you for the reminder.

Frank Sinatra also gave advice to school children about ethnic slurs. Maybe Gregory Peck too.

Me neither.

I don't know what's taboo on TV these days--I thought everything was allowed.

most is allowed in terms of vulgarities and depravities, but there is a new era in terms of militant "political correctness" vis a vis race, gender, lifestyles, disability, mutations

i.e. Adam Sandler has been deemed to be a violator of social justicia, and he has gone from a huge box office draw to films straight to Netflix streams

it even got too much for Prez Obamar, in his recent commencement addresses to the youth, one of the themes was "OK, you guys don't need to be THAT sensitive"
