ATU--The Movie, EPISODE I (with epilogue part 1 and 2) -- and EPISODE II -- and EPISODE III -- and EPISODE IV -- and EPISODE V -- and EPISODE VI

Post  pinhedz on Fri Apr 26, 2013 6:18 am

Tho 134 pages (67 two times) of ATU-The-Movie were somehow deleted, they seem to be preserved here:

http://acrosstheuniverse.forummotion.com/t2005-atu-the-movie-episode-i-with-epilogue-part-1-and-2-and-episode-ii-and-episode-iii-and-episode-iv-and-episode-v-and-episode-vi

Page 135 starts here:

... Mae West would never miss a party where Dave Apollon was performing.

She loved him--absolutely LOVED the living daylights out of him. I love you I love you  I love you

Here's the story, in her own words:

• • Mae West wrote: "At a rehearsal of this show I first met Dave Apollon. He had just arrived in this country, after some hardships, and was in the show. He was a fine mandolin player and Russian dancer. I first saw him dressed in a very tight-fitting green tweed suit that looked as if it had been made for a smaller brother, high button shoes, and a high Hoover collar. He was short but slender, with a round elf's face, and a turned-up nose over a mocking mouth. He had a sour-cream heavy Russian accent, and a very amusing way of expressing himself in a fractured English almost like double-talk. Dave was very funny, I thought, but in the show he just played the mandolin and did a short dance. I couldn't help being amused by him and I would have him come to me so that I could ask him questions just to hear him mangle the language. I would try not to laugh out loud, just inwardly, and somehow everything became funnier that way. When Dave Apollon would start talking it would break me up inside. He'd ask, 'Whut suz funnik I'm saying please to tell me?'"
• • I said to him, "Dave, with your mannerisms, voice, and puzzled expression that seems to struggle to understand what is said, you make me scream with laughter. What would you be able to do to an audience?"
• • "But no thenk you — — I serious minded fella, this mandolin and dancing very serious for me is enough."
• • Mae West persisted and soon had Dave reading lines in a skit about Circe and her lovers. When the show opened in South Norwalk, Connecticut, it was discovered that the scenery was too small for the theater. The producer was about to write a formal apology for the theater manager to read to the opening-night audience, when Mae came up with an idea.
• • "Get Dave Apollon to go out before the curtain, in a spotlight, in his own tight little green street suit, and with that borscht dialect he should really be, funny telling them about the scenery." They captured Dave, fed him hot tea, patted his back, told him he could do it. Finally, Dave did go out on the stage to make the announcement. The more he got tangled up in the English language, the more scared and bewildered he looked, the more the audience howled. He became so screamingly funny the audience doubled up in the seats. They applauded madly, thinking it was all a part of the original show. He came off pop-eyed. "I sweating like a hoss," he said.

Needless to say, it wasn't 10 minutes before Dave Apollon and Mae West headed upstairs. silent

The great thing about Paderewski's mansion was that it had so many guest rooms. There were only a few guests left down in the banquet hall--Alice Hibbing and Pinhead Wackerman were still there--they had been slow-dancing for three hours. Rolling Eyes

The slow dancing was a bit out of step with the music--it was Richard Fitzgood and Bluebottle jamming away on that great ol' tune "When You Go A'Courtin'," while Rev. Watson clapped along.

Basil was wondering where Amanda had got to, but there was nothing he could do but join the lads on stage and try his hand at hillbilly balalaika.

Other than the aforementioned, the only other guests still in the hall were the hard-core admirers of Richard Fitzgood and Feliks:

So, what we got is 8 lovely ladies and two very well-dressed young lads, obviously waiting for a chance to invite Richard Fitzgood upstairs (or maybe a few of them are interested in BlueBottle, who knows).

The Reverend Watson was the only one clapping along, and Pinhead and Alice, oblivious to everyone else, just shuffled slowly around the dance floor gazing into each other's eyes. I love you I love you I love you

Mack and BlueMoon, trying not to make eye contact with Pinhead Wackerman (they needn't have worried about that ), pulled two chairs over from the dinner tables and joined the group watching the show.

Mack sat down next to one of those lovely flappers, and said: "they're doin' alright, those pickers, ain't they?"

The girl heaved a deep sigh, and said: "All I want is to make love to Richard Fitzgood one time, and then I can die." I love you I love you I love you

Mack didn't really get it--he liked Bluebottle better.

Mack -- "But those other pickers are pretty good, too, ain't they?"

Flapper - "My second choice is Basil. Such a brooding, melancholy Russian dreamboat." I love you I love you I love you

Mack -- "I don't think I understand women." scratch

Bluebottle started playing "Hard Time Killin' Floor," which took Richard and Basil by surprise, but they quickly got into the groove.

It also took Pinhead Wackerman by surprise; he said to Alice "Do you hear that?" Shocked

Alice -- "I've never heard anything like that before." Shocked

Pinhead -- "Because there isn't anything like it."

Pinhead and Alice got themselves a pair of chairs and joined the others.

The rendition with classical guitar, mandolin harp and balalaika was never recorded.

All we have is a rendition recorded by Skip James 25 years later:

Actually, that is not all--we also have Joanne Kelly:

Pinhead Wackerman felt feverish. He went to the bar and got a bottle of vodka.

Then he drank the whole thing. Shocked drunken

Pinhead -- "Who are you?" Shocked

Svetlana -- "You must play legato--not just 'thunk, thunk, thunk'." bounce

Pinhead -- "What are you talking about?" Shocked

Svetlana -- "We have only three more rehearsals, and then concert!" Mad

Pinhead -- "My finger hurts." Neutral

Vision -- "Audience does not care how your finger hurts, they only care how you play."

That was completely imaginary, of course. Pinhead Wackerman had never even seen a balalaika until he met Basil. geek

Bluemoon -- "Pinhead Wackerman is incapacitated by inebriation. We could easily apprehend him now."

Mack -- "Don't go gettin' carried away all precipitous-like. This is a perpetrator that knows a thing or two about the Colt-firearm trigger system, and he must be regarded as armed and dangerous in the extreme. We don't want to be generatin' no collateral corpses!" bounce

Bluemoon always was the hot-headed one. Yup.

The musicians were about played out. Bluebottle had been showing a flair for entertaining banter:

Bluebottle -- "Well folks, I believe that we have invented a new musical genre here tonight--Hillbilly Russian Blues!" Very Happy

Basil -- "I am liking this Hillbilly Russian Blues."

Fitzgood -- "Me too."

But Los Tuyos had just been sitting on stage since her dance partner disappeared with Amanda, and she was more than a bit disgruntled.

Los Tuyos -- "How can I dance to these 'Hillbilly Russian Blues?' " Mad

Bluebottle -- "She's got a point there, gentlemen. We should wrap things up now with a quick-steppin' dance tune."

Fitzgood -- "How about 'Fandango' by Padre Antonio Soler?"

Bluebottle -- "A man of the cloth?"

Fitzgood -- "Yes, but a wild one."

Rev. Watson -- "Some of us are, you know." Cool

Basil -- "I know this piece!" Very Happy

Blue -- "You two start then, and I'll fake it." geek

The excitement of the Fandango and Los Tuyos' whirling and stamping roused Pinhead from his drunken stupor.

Mack sidled up to him, looking for the telltale bulge of a Colt 1911 under his jacket. Suspect

Mack (innocently) -- "That there dancing girl--ain't she just the prettiest thing?" Cool

Pinhead -- "Yes, but what I find more remarkable is her mastery of her art."

Mack -- "Mastery of her art, eh? I reckon you must me one of them edjicated eastern fellers."

Pinhead was still to drunk to recognize the artful craftiness in Mack's "innocent" curiousity. drunken

Pinhead -- "Yes, I come from the eastern part of the country, and I've always been interested in music and the arts."

Mack -- "That's what I figured. What did you say your name was?

Pinhead -- "Wack … Paddock. My name is Ignatius Paddock."

Mack -- "Pleased to meet'cha Mr. Paddock. My name's Ma … George."

As the Fandango reached it's climactic finish, two of the lovely ladies rushed up to Los Tuyos and said: "Please teach us to dance like that!" What a Face

Two of the others rushed up to Richard Fitzgood and said: "We just love a climactic finish! Can we look at your instrument?" What a Face

The other girls homed in on Bluebottle and Basil, enchanted by the sounds of the mando-harp and the balalaika.

Soon they were all getting better acquainted, looking at the exotic instruments and trying them out, snuggling and chatting.

Pinhead Wackerman, heedless of the danger sitting right next to him, was feeling very much as ease, thinking: "Parties are always best like this, when there are only a few people left." drunken
