Geez, the Europeen public sure seemz naive bout tha 21st century ( or any other century, which is also when allies spied on allies). Angie Merkels, and President Le Frog are having to stage puppet shows for the people about "bugging outrage" ... but get this, Angie didn't put an encryption chip on her cell phone until 2009, whaa?  Even a low level drug dealer in the USA knows everything that happens on a cell phone is public record, that's why like in the spy movies or the crime movies, folks are always smashing and trashing they phones

i mean geez louise, even the movie Plup Faction by Quint Tarantine knew this almost 20 years ago:

"Are you calling me on a cell phone?  I don't know you.  Prank caller,  prank caller!"

NSA 'rector inherited posh Strek digs

We’ve been hearing a lot about that Star Trek-esque command center run by now-NSA Director Gen. Keith Alexander when he was leading the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command.

But while the spy chief seemed to enjoy a  Captain Kirk-worthy facility at Fort Belvoir, Va., which was reportedly the creation of a Hollywood set designer, it turns out that the command center was already in place when he took the job. It was built, sources tell our colleague Ellen Nakashima, in 1998. Alexander took over the post in 2001.

Not to say that he didn’t revel in the futuristic command center’s bells and whistles, which include doors that make a distinctive “whooshing” sound when opening or closing. But it seems he didn’t, as some reports have suggested, personally “model” his working space after the digs of Spock and company.

Joel Harding, a retired Army officer very familiar with the room, described the space in a 2010 interview with The Post thusly: It had eight wide screens, a graphics processor designed in consultation with Disney, and a stainless steel captain’s chair. “It was always called the Captain Kirk chair,” he said. “The whole thing was Star Trek, Star Trek to the max.”

But Keith Alexander was the senior intelligence officer at Centcom at the time. “He had nothing to do with creating the center,” said Harding, who was an information operations officer on the Joint Staff and worked with the center, which at the time called the Land Information Warfare Activity.

Still, the nifty workspace seemed to make an impression on the members of congress and other important visitors who dropped by to check it out. “Everybody wanted to sit in the chair at least once to pretend he was Jean-Luc Picard,” a retired officer in charge of VIP visits told Foreign Policy.

We wonder if those visitors felt twinges of envy, and we can only hope that the design inspired high-ranking visitors to undertake some redecorating of their own digs to satisfy their respective fantasies. Perhaps a ship captain’s quarters, complete with mahogany steering wheels.

Googel mad at mind-rape rivals?

"Fuck these guys."

That's what Brandon Downey, a security engineer with Google, wrote late last month, upon learning that the NSA had broken into Google and Yahoo and was exploiting the data of millions of users, allegedly without the companies' knowledge. He added, "We suspected this was happening, [but] it still makes me terribly sad."

Executives at Google, which issued a polite denial when the first revelations about PRISM came out, were publicly furious over the new revelations (which the NSA denied): "We are outraged at the lengths to which the government seems to have gone to intercept data from our private fiber networks."

saw a hacker on tv that said it was good all the non-privacy (coming to light) because internet (and computers) wasn't designed as a secure thing to have all kind of personal information, so it would make people realise it.

And I guess for that it shouldn't grow as a "requirement" for life basics

Absolutely true--no one should put anything on the WEB unless they're OK with the whole world knowing it--it's like putting it on TV.

I've always considered it ridiculous that people think they can "PM" people they've never met and expect the content to be "private" (private between whom? Rolling Eyes ).

It's "data mining," and the data is way, way too much.

In a simpler time, the cop just walked his beat every day looking for suspicious activity. He'd look and listen as he walked up and down the street--making people uncomfortable. And sometimes he'd sit in an unmarked car, watching people unawares, or observing comings and goings at certain addresses.

It's not that different from what they do now--but it's higher-tech now and there's way too much info.

And if people value their privacy so much, why do they talk into there cell phones all the time at the top of their voices in public places? Shocked

And why is it OK for investigative reporters to dig into celebrities private affairs and then tell the whole world?

new tech requires new tech for security authorities? That sounds reasonable, but still not sure it's the same, a cop would need a special permission/order to register a house, no? it's really the privacy unrestrictedly accessed... on the internet, so I see, it probably comes from the first part of the post I made, that it was not meant for private affairs (but this also includes things as searching for a job, not just socialising activities)

But to define it as what it is I think is important, if the world changes and certain security methods has to change, what they become has to be said too

---
investigative reporters, or just reporters, sometimes leave me wondering which authority they are (the times when apparently they behave as one more than just doing a good job)

edit: enaff with the editions!

The police often decide what to do on the spur of the moment (I'm not sure where the legal line is). They've stopped me several times at night to run a check on me, and they once stopped and searched me in broad daylight to see if I was a drug dealer because they thought I looked suspicious, and I'm certain they had not done any paperwork--they were just acting on "probable cause," I reckon.

The universe of international telecommunications is so crowded, and it's practically all chaff with only a few useful grains to provide leads, so the technological task is to filter out the rubbish and identify the good info--if there even is any good info.  The first stage is to discard all the blather being transmitted around the world by the likes of us. geek

first off, lots of gubment spooks abuse the technology and for instance spy on their sexy neighbor Janelle, and other stuff . It said so on the TV news show.  Also, if the Fourth Amendment is a doofusy, outmoded concept that doesn't belong in a world of sneaky rag-heads... then I guess we should say goodbye to it, instead of just ignoring it.   That seems a bit more fair to poor ol' Fourthy.  Crying or Very sad

The fourth--is that the one about unreasonable search?
Or is it the one that says the policeman has to plug his/her ears when people talk too loud into their phones.

How will they ever find the needle in the haystack with everybody generating more and more hay every day?

If you don't want to be heard--then give it a rest fer cryin' out loud.

filchfact - absolutely everything the government has ever done meets with pineboxez' elephant seal of approval. The Senate Intelligence Committee announced the other day that gubment spook data slurpers routinely sneak into the computers of congress-persons and monkey around with them willy-nilly ... all par for the course when it comes to DC lobbyists like cabronhedz and his goon Frank Sturgis. The really bad stuff the gub'mint does will never come to light if the public is distracted by Yakima Feinstein's rants (like that one^).
She's complaining that the gub'mint (which includes her, btw Suspect ) was looking at their own documents on their own computers. Razz
