“Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.”

-- Mingus (in defense of gross oversimplification)

A musician in Thelonious Monk's band had problems reading the part Monk wrote out for him, so he asked:

-- Is this a C natural or a C sharp?

-- Yeah, one of those.

Spaghetti Junction wrote:I thought Monk was such a perfectionist.

He might have been; he was not being dismissive or indifferent, he was telling the player to use his own judgment. I saw this on film, and it was an earnest discussion. It continued:

-- Is this a C natural or a C sharp?

-- Yeah, one of those.

-- Which note do you want me to play?

-- whatever note you want.

Cuban pianist Rubén González (made famous by Ry Cooder's "Buena Vista Social Club") first heard a Jelly Roll Morton solo piano recording a few years ago, and said:

"Ah yes, habanera music. A little before my time."

George Hambitzer, Gershwin's piano teacher around 1912-1914, wrote a letter to his sister to tell her about his new student (who he thought was really good):

"He's interested in this modern stuff, jazz and what-not, but I'm not going to let him play that--yet"

"I'm coming back. There are no jazz bands in New Orleans."

"Jazz is not dead, ladies 'n gentlemen, it just smells funny"

"Take the most skilled white jazz musician in the world and he still would be inferior to a random black person plucked off the street who had never played music before. White people have no business playing jazz. I am the best. No seriously, I am really really awesome. I consider myself to be the world's leading authority on jazz, both in terms of explication and performance. Is there anyone greater than me? Probably not." - Wynton Marsalis

"My bucket Your bucket who is to say..."-anonymous

A Monk side man trying to decipher his chart:

-- Is this a c-sharp or a c-natural?
-- Yeah
-- Which is it?
-- One of those
-- What notes do you want me to play?
-- Whatever notes you want

"The majority of juice-heads and winos and junkies aren't musicians. " - Thelonious Monk

"I can shoot pool, and I can play ping-pong. I'm pretty good at those games. " - T. Monk

"I hit the piano with my elbow sometimes because of a certain sound I want to hear, certain chords." - T.

"I guess, you know, if I didn't make it with the piano, I guess I would've been the biggest bum." - T. Monk

"Stan Kenton can stand in front of a thousand fiddles and a thousand brass, give the downbeat and every studio arranger can nod his head and say 'Oh yes, that's done like this.' But Duke merely lifts a finger, the horns make a sound, and nobody knows what it is!''
