Here's the thing, before one can even begin to talk about unified field theory, it's necessary to understand general relativity.

And general relativitists can only talk to other general relativitists. geek

And--of course--you can't study general relativity until after you understand special relativity.

Who can tell us what is so special about special relativity?

Well, it's like this:

"Special" in this context really just means narrowly limited. The theory can't "general" cases, it can only handle a specific class of problems--the "special" case of constant velocity with no acceleration or deceleration.

So you have to imagine that all of the moving objects were always moving, and never slow down or speed up.

Isn't that "special." Rolling Eyes

To make general relativity fit the real world, Einstein had to conclude (had to, because otherwise the theory doesn't work) that massive objects, with their large gravitational pull, distort time-space.

The so-called "Einstein's Cross" is a quasar that they say proves Eisntein's hypothesis. The quasar is about 8 billion light-years from Earth, and sits behind a galaxy that is 400 million light-years away. Four images of the quasar appear around the galaxy because the intense gravity of the galaxy bends the light coming from the quasar.
